Really?! I didn't know that window tint was illegal in the UK. Is it just not permitted on the front windows? Ray

You can only go so far on the front windows. Because sometime once in the past somewhere in the EU a cyclist/biker got knocked off their machine because allegedly the tint prevented the driver from seeing said cyclist/biker. All bollocks in my view! Steve N | 21MY Defender

Yes, I'm aware of the tint levels by state here in the USA and of course I'm aware of it in my home state. However, it actually depends on the area of the state that you are in. The police don't make a big deal of it due to how it varies state by state across the country. It's definitely something that they don't make a big deal of here in the Southern California desert. You often see the police cars with dark tint on them because the summer heat is extreme here. Even if you run across an officer that does decide to write you a citation then you just have to remove the tint and pay a $25 fine. The officers here in California have way more important things to focus on than stop everyone they see with a tint violation. I'm sure it's like that in other states as well because whenever I visit Arizona or Texas, I see many cars with the windows almost totally blacked out with tint around 5-10 percent visibility. Ray

Aren't fines more if it's deemed an infraction? Then you introduce comparative negligence to any accident... I guess it could be considered OK if it saves you having to dig out a pair of dark sunglasses whilst driving in the middle of the night. |

And the dark sunglasses case completely blows away the point of restrictions on tint darkness n the first place.

I dont get why anyone would want to restrict their front light and therefore vision (and the same applies to lights where people frost them).
I want to see as much as i can and been seen as brightly as possible. Its like dirty hi-vis! Mike |

Actually quite the opposite, it's the basic reason. Sunglasses can be removed, tinted windows less so. I think the law is different for tinted visors, reflecting the same logic. Can't you can have a car without headlights, but you are not allowed to drive at night? Tint your windows and you should have the same restriction. |

The tint that I have on my 2 front windows is high quality ceramic tint that's about 25% which matches the rear windows. The ceramic tint does a really good job of blocking the sun rays. It's really not that dark and I can see out of it well enough at night that it doesn't hinder my visibility. I understand that this is not common in the UK but it's very common here is the USA to see vehicles with even darker tint. The main reason that I have it is because of the extreme heat in the desert region that I live in. The summer heat is extreme hear and if you ever have a chance to visit then you will see for yourself why there are many vehicles with tint on their front windows...including police cars. Ray

SN, that's also true here in the USA...you often see vehicles sold from the LR Dealer that have tint on the front windows. However, they do charge you for it and I think you also have to sign a disclosure. Many customers request it so it's an easy way for the dealership to make a little extra money. Once again, the police don't make a big deal of it especially in areas that have extreme heat and the dealerships know this. For example, I have a next door neighbor and several other law enforcement officers within the gated community that I live in and all of their personal vehicles have tint on their front windows that's even darker than mine. the use of aftermarket Tint in Australia is common, not to try and make the car look cool
 but
to actually protect the occupants against UV.. No point going with LR's privacy glass, only reaches the B pillar and has very minimal UV protection.. LR dealers in OZ typically arrange for the ceramic tint to be done prior to delivery, so you have UV protection from day one. yet another pommie bar steward down under MY20 110 P400 SE Defender MY10 3.0 RR Sport |
