Find the oil leak - Christmas Special!!
Help needed! There is an oil leak coming from so where under the bonnet. The top picture of from under the engine. In the top of the pic is the dpf. The leak is coming around the seam of the bell housing from above. The bottom pic is from the top of the engine. There is wet oil residue in the circled area.

What do you think?!!

Just behind where you circled on the lower picture is the vacuum pump. Perhaps it is the source? Not sure where the vacuum pump gets the power from, but very likely that it connects to the exhaust cam shaft. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Thanks Dinnu, appreciate the quick reply. Sounds like a job for the garage then.

Any other theories out there?

Perhaps it is part No2 in link below. Just guessing though. If it is, there does not seem to be any specialist work to replace, just access is restricted.

Nice one. I’ll check it out. Looks straight forward enough, will get the bonnet off later this week to get a better look.

Interestingly, I’ve lost a little bit of fuel economy in the last month or so. Any link to a vac pump leak?

Possibly just 2 bolts. Perhaps no need to disconnect the vacuum hoses.

I doubt if it is leaking oil there will affect fuel economy.
Tyre pressures ok? When it gets cold, pressure drops. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Had another look today and it looks like your are right Dinnu, so I’ll get one ordered up. Thanks a bunch. Install looks bloody awkward, I don’t think I’ll be able to get the pump off without removing the ecu as clearance looks to be bloody tight!

👍👍 I think you are lucky that you do not have an AC refrigerant line passing right next to vacuum pump! 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Hi Co1, not sure but in your top pic, where you have it circled, has the metal part broken/fractured away from the screw ?
or is it meant to be like that ? 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper.

It’s a shadow line from the bell housing flange into the dpf heat shield. Thumbs Up

Right then, we’re back for round 2! Finally got round to doing the vac pump seal last week and... it’s still leaking! There is oil dripping by the hole in the bell housing but not from it, it is coming from above and running round. It only does it when it is warm, not all the time.

The crank shaft seal was done a few months back when the clutch was done. I don’t seem to be losing much oil going by the dipstick.

Answers on the back of a postcard.

If the leak was due to an overfilled gearbox, where would it leak out from? I seem to think I’ve had the leak since a service.

Are you sure it is lubricating oil not fuel? What does it smell like?
