Yep pain in the ass as you can't left foot brake many German cars in particular.......

Only time I have found it remotely useful was on late 90's LT35's that had woeful brakes as std but could stop reasonably if you simply touched the throttle at the are time...... Mr. Green

Have you tried applying the handbrake while moving - have you seen what that does (dont do it on a road)

Many moons ago when the wife had an Evoque we went to the LRE and I asked the instructor the same question.

He explained that it was an emergency brake and works on all four wheels, not just the rears as per the old cable handbrake days....he then went down the private drive and demonstrated it for us..

No dramas, just bought the car to a stop in a straight line.

Guessing the Defender is the same.

My son (being the 4 year old messer he is) tested this feature for me on either a Discovery Sport or Evoque we had as a courtesy car. Only he didn't say anything and we were doing 70mph on the M6 on our way back to the dealers. Not sure who shat themselves more, me or him!

Thankfully it was early on a saturday morning so no one else was involved, but it really does bring a car to a good stop! 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

Oops

I think that is why the emergency brake is now situated just above the drivers knee and away from the passenger. Took me a while to realise where it is when wifey got a Velar.

Yes it brings the vehicle to a controlled stop across all the wheels Mike

What's an "emergency brake" in the context of a modern car, then? Why is it necessary (after about 150 years of not being necessary)?
