Shift into Neutral without car on
When parking my car in the garage I sometimes back up a bit too much so I can't open the tailgate (I have to back into my garage). With my old car I used to shift it into Neutral and just let it roll forward the couple inches that I wanted it to, no need to turn the engine on for that little movement. Is it possible to shift into Neutral without turning the engine on? I tried to look this up in the Owners Manual but no luck.

TL;DR: How do you shift into Neutral without turning the engine on.

Can’t help you with the N situation but if you don’t have the ignition on you also cannot steer the car, the steering wheel simply will not move as the car has electric power assisted steering and it locks if no power. Tennis ball hung from ceiling to touch rear screen, side mirror, etc when in ideal spot is your answer; or even a brick behind rear wheel.

Or read "Chickenhawk" and see how they land helicopters in tight spaces...

Once, a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away - well late 90s and in my D1 - was helped into a very tight space. We’re talking like 3” - 4” either end. Had no problem getting guided in, the chap who did guiding had even been on a course on parking in small spaces. It’s absurd how tight a space can be. Since then I have lost the skills but at one time I was happily parking in the most crazily tight spaces. Occasionally using the French Method, otherwise known as Le Bump. Thumbs Up

Try this - it's how you do it on some of the other models:

This assumes you have battery power. If not, connect up another battery and then follow the procedure.

1. Turn on ignition.
2. Press brake pedal and hold.
3. With brake pedal pressed, pull the + transmission paddle, and hold for more than 10 seconds.
4. The gear selector will rise and you can select neutral.

Only slight problem, Defender doesn’t have paddles or the rotary knob gear selector.

Yeah I have a brick but sometimes I kick it around and or it moves slightly when either cleaning the garage or now getting stuff out of the back.

I kinda tried this. Held the brake and pushed the shifter one notch forward and held. I will have to try 10 seconds or more. Then I wonder if Tim's comment comes in that I won't have steering or if the battery will power that?
