Dye TD4 headliner black
Has anyone attempted or even managed to do this properly?

I am currently in the middle of finding and sealing a leak in my roof and while the headlining is out I got the idea of making it black. I don't have the skills/time to remove the old material and cover it in something like suede and got the idea of dying it black.
I've seen some videos on YouTube and it looked really good! I am just wondering if the material used by LR is even able to be dyed correctly?

Has anyone tried this before or knows which material the original white headlining is made of?
Any ideas and opinions are welcome! Thumbs Up

Greetings from Munich!
Felix

That video might help. “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique.

Thanks, looks great - but I don't really want to use new material/strip the old.
Thinking if a paint roller and some textile dye is an easier way to go as what I have seen on Youtube looks really good!

Some even use normal spray bottles to apply the dye... ?t=204

However I am not sure of the material used in our LRs is able to absorb the dye correctly as the headlining I am used too from other cars is far softer than that in my LR. It seems rather plastic. Would be interesting to know if the headliner of the Freelander seen in the video is the same as in my Defender...

FWIW, many people (myself included) strip and paint the head liner on Disco 2 to fix the sagging that inevitably happen, I reckon it should be easier on a Defender considering there is no fabric to start with… “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique.

I recently bought a few cans of TRG Black Vinyl Dye to do just this! But haven’t got round to it yet as I don’t have access to my parents garage due to lockdown.

I figured if it goes horribly wrong I can always retrim it. > 110 XS Double Cab

I thought the same.. start with the rear piece and if things go really wrong there is always an Plan B...

From what I remember, the material looks the same on the sun visors.

Yes same product Thumbs Up

I thought I would try a trial piece with a small trim piece from my double cab to see how it comes out (don't think station wagon's have these trims though)

That youtube video is good. Can't quite tell, is the freelander headliner kind of furry? The Defender is flat plastic/vinyl > 110 XS Double Cab

The Freelander does seem to have a softer textil than the Defender material below Whistle

Looks really good, I've a Lasalle one waiting to be fitted, what colour/texture was it to start with, I think I went for the basic grey? 1984 90 V8 puma want to be.

Nice Smile 6 of the 400ml cans?

Is this the best source? https://www.vinyldye.co.uk/Black-Vinyl-Dye-Plastic-Paint-By-TRG

Yes the large 400ml cans. That site is indeed the correct product but at £15.99 per can.

If you order from the below ebay link the guy does them for £10.16 per can when you buy 4+. Quick delivery too

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283832974379

But that vinyldye website does have some excellent instructions https://www.vinyldye.co.uk/How-To-Use-Vinyl-Spray-Dye

Couple of tips, don't use acetone as suggested - this melts the vinyl (ask me how I know Laughing ) so just clean up well with detergent and water... Or try the TRG cleaner they suggest

Secondly... Many many fine coats gives a much better finish than going with fewer thick coats. At first you will think it's not covering but stick with it and build up the coats. It dries in minutes with thick coats so doesn't take too long. Just keep going panel to panel doing a thin dusting and by the first panel will be dry by the time you finish the last one so you can can just go round again and again and again until you're happy > 110 XS Double Cab
