Pumas CAN be push started.
Automatics cannot, just pushed when in Neutral. Though I remember from somewhere that if you can get an automatic up to about 60kph, you can try starting it then  |

It used to be possible to tow start some autos, back in the days when they were all-hydraulic in operation, but only if a rear pump was fitted to the transmission. IIRC the Borg-Warner 35 or 65 was sometimes so fitted.
These were popular on safari motors at one time since they could be tow started provided the TC was properly filled, but you couldn't push start them manually because of the speed necessary. I don't think any of the modern electronic autos can be push or tow started. |

Blackwolf you are definitely showing your age now. I remember working on the Borg Warner 35's as an apprentice. I don't know what was in that horrible red transmission oil but it sure cleaned your hands after a day stripping down the box. I'd love to have a drive in a car with the BW 35 box and compare it to my modern day 9 speed auto. Defender 90XS SW

thanks everybody.
nice to know a puma can be push started. any tricks to that? if i park on a slope and run the battery down, could i roll start it? i thought the lack of electronics would intervene |

I doubt that you could push/tow start a Puma with no electrical power whatsoever, but provided that the battery has some power, even if not enough to crank, it should work.
With no power at all there will be no way to excite the alternator so no power can be generated (so you couldn't tow start it with no battery fitted, for example). In theory you could probably tow start a 200tdi with no battery and get it running, although it might take a bit of fiddling around. |

IIRC even a 200tdi needs 12v to the fuel solenoid to start it?

"Push starting" a Puma:
10/11 years ago I did an LR Experience in a 2.4 Puma and the instructor was quite clear that it could be bumpstarted on a steep hill. I say "bumpstarted" - brakes on, in gear, ignition on, take the brakes off and it would roll and start without the starter motor. I sem to recall that this was in low ratio as well. |

Yes, it was But letting it start itself, without using the startermotor, isn't that different to bumpstarting ?

You are correct, from 12J engine onwards (change to timing belt driven injection pumps), they had an electrical fuel shut off valve on the injection pump. The valve is normally closed, so the engine will not start unless a 12V is supplied to the solenoid. The 10J as fitted to series and some early coil sprung had a manual shut off.
