Penman trailer refurb
Anyone interested in pictures/story on my recent Penman purchase?

It had been rolled, so needed some TLC.

Nah, should be able to straighten it out with a big enough hammer and some heat. Failing that I'll get a good used one. Want to return it to factory condition.

Will post some pics up later....

So, here goes. Been a bit busy at work this week so not had chance to sit down and start this.

I've had a hankering for a Penman for ages. Had a few narrow and widetrack Sankeys in the past.

Saw this one on eblag, it had been rolled and had some of the brake parts missing, but would be a good base for a little rebuild project.

The auction finished, no one bid, so I contacted the seller and went to see him after a days laning on the plain (He lives just outside Devizes).
Turns out we vaguely knew each other from a year or 2 back, and were both in the TA many years back (same sqn), so kicked the tyres and we had a deal.

Good drive home... you hardly know its on the back:

Not too much damage to the tub. I reckon with some oxy heat and a big enough hammer that'll tap out. Same with the bend in the top, some heat, winch, hilift & scaffhold planks or some angle, it should straighten out.
Failing that I'll get a replacement tub.

As I was off work the week I got it, and the weather was glorious, I started stripping it ASAP:

Tub came off very easily. As it's stainless and so are most of the fixing bolts around the trailer, it all came apart easily.
Chassis is in good shape apart from the front LH outrigger that had a slight kink in it (due to the roll over)

Closer inspection showed the master cylinder (and PRV) and RH brake caliper missing.

And front jack missing, but I've found a source for an identical replacement

The LH CES locker was also missing it's door. Was about to think about making one or buying a used one (£35!) when the seller texted me to say he'd found it, so I popped in when out and about with work and collected it up quickly!

A good jetwash and wire brush of the surface rust on the chassis, and a splash of red-lead:

This shows the twisted outrigger.... hilift and some hefty tube soon had it straight again!

I've got some replacement lamps for it now. They look like Td5 defender type, made by Perei, but they have 3 lugs on the bulb holder, not 2 like the defender ones do... also a better sealed bulb holder. Kept watching ebay (and with someone on the FB Penman page giving my the heads up) and some turned up in Swindon, so just across town. another spares ticked.
The convoy light unit was also rusted to Censored . SO removed that and with the needle file cleaned it up quite well. Not that I need a convoy light, but I want the trailer to be as close to factory as possible:

The brake master cylinder is missing. I've not got one yet but it's just a Girling 0.75 (0,75" diameter piston), and apparently a standard part, so I can either get a new one off eblag or look for a decent used one and get a re-seal kit for it (anyone got one?)
Also there was an in-service brske modification for these trailers; the gas pressurised cylinder was junked in favour of a PRV unit, which was all missing. A hint that the x-MoD site had some for sale was correct, so bought the complete kit for about £65. good deal.

I still needed the RH brake caliper. and when I removed the wheels, also a RH brake mud shield and most of the auto reverse unit Rolling Eyes
a chap on the FB Penman page came up trumps with a complete axle.. It was off of an ex Marines trailer, so almost had barnicles on it, but all the brake bits were present & correct, so a bimble up to Bedford and an exchange of beer tokens, I had an axle:

Calipers and brake guards cleaned up well:

I was going to rebuild the axle in situe on the trailer, but that's outside and by now the westher has turned pants, so I thought, lets clean this spare axle up and build it in the garage. Tried wire brushing it (with the angle grinder brush) but it was a horrid job, plus I wouldn't have been able to get into the nooks and crannies on the end brackets, so I got it shot blasted. Best £45 I've spent! was turned around in under 24hrs:

should get the LH hub & caliper on tomorrow morning before work. If the weather is nice at the weekend, some paint on the chassis as well.
I'm going to remove the old axle (just drop one end of the leaf springs down and roll it out on a trolley), then give the springs a good wire brush and quick coat of black, then roll the "new" axle into position.

More pics to follow once I get that done....

Ooh.... it came with a nearly new XZL and a part worn G90, both on wolf rims.
;
I had a spare pair of Goodyear MTR's off of my 110 (which runs them as well), so I popped them onto the rims.

Should look good all 6 wheels hvaing the same tyres... wonder how noisy it'll be?

And after a rub down and lick of NATO green...

Tha antiroll bar was also quite crusty. But a good wirebrush showed it was just surface.
Also, the balljoints for the A/R bar, and bushes and U brackets are all LR defender items....

Got an hour in this morning, so the LH hub and caliper are now fitted. The axle is as dressed as I want it now prior to fitting.

so later on I need to pull the chassis back to the front of the garage and get the old axle off, and the paintbrush out....
