You either think they're archetypal Land Rover Defender or you hate them... but Brownchurch racks are great and well priced. Black plasti-coated and they don't look too agricultural either. A few of us are fans on here (wyvern for example) but they tend to be on 110s. They do a 90 version though.
No experience of the pricey flash end of the market as I'm not minted. Ask TACK ![]() ![]() |

Nick, first question is do you actually need a roof rack or would roof bars do?
Roof bars are lighter and cheaper then roof racks If all you want is to support a roof tent then 2, preferably 3 will suffice. Starting with roof bars. Steel roof bars, electro plated start at £100 - £150 for 2-bars or 3 bars Safari Equip do a pair of twin low level roof bars which are about £210 for a pair of twin bars Rhino Rack (of Australia) do a 1500mm ali bar with glass fibre brackets. Believe the current price will be about £230/pair. Do not confuse Rhino Rack of Australia with UK companies which have Rhino in their name I understand that there is likely to be a new roof bar coming onto UK market in next few weeks. ROOF RACKS Avoiding the cheap ebay type steel roof racks. Choices include Patriot Racks. These are made in the UK, are modular and ali A 2m one would be about £830, luggage rail + £150, powder coated + £150, ladder about £130 Hannibal, South African welded ali is about £1,050 including ladder. Front Runner, South African for a 90 would be about £660 plus £102 for a ladder Rhino Rack (Australia) do both luggage and platform baskets from about £100-£150 depending on size. Also do alloy trays in a variety of sizes from about £250 upwards Hope that helps Brendan |

Since a rack will be at least 30+ kg and you want it easily removable then you will need the use of an electric hoist, plenty of headroom plus a decent size garage etc to store rack. This is what I use for putting roof rack or tents on with. With 3 roof bars you could do what you require. Set one roof bar quite far back so when sliding timber/boards up you do not take paint off the back of your roof! 8 x 4 sheets are better either delivered or carried on a flat bed trailer. If I can help further give me a bell. Brendan |

Big Country roof racks are top. Tough as anything and a good price when you can find them
The slats go the length of the truck as well which reduces the wind noise. It sits very close to the roof as well so doesnt look like a load of angle iron chucked on the roof! Good price as well £695 including a ladder. Pom |

I've got a Hannibal on my 90, and it's permanently on. Fuel consumption is a up by about 1l/100km, so not much of a penalty. --

Just fitted a ryno full lenth to my 110 with gas bottle holder, jerry can racks and spot light mounts. I have an oze tent that would be destroyed on rough tracks without it because of its length. Here in Aus parts can be bought for ryno at any parts store. After a 5000km trip with a lesser known rack and lots of trouble, ie holes worn in the tent on

If you decide on what type of rack you want and you've got the time and the inclination stick up a *Wanted Thread* for a rack....I did and had the initial offer of a Hannibal and a Patriot rack at a fraction of new cost from two fellow forum members! Dip your toe in the water and see what bites, you may have to wait a while because they are like hen's teeth! I only waited a couple of weeks though!

Patriot rack is super heavy (the guys from Patriot that fitted mine reckon around 80kg with the rail and brackets). That's a sizeably chunk of your up-top weight limit gone just there. That said, they're literally bomb proof and will easily outlast your Defender. Apparently Patriot are making a lighter rack.
The Hannibal ones are much lighter. Although, in theory, they're not as tough (or field-maintainable unless you carry aluminium welding gear with you), I've never heard of one breaking. They also have the slotted bars for securing loads. Frontrunner have bars running across the vehicle (the other 2 have them running the length of the roof) so you get much more wind noise. Personally, I made my decision and bought British. ![]() + New Defender 110 First Edition |

My roofrack does this job perfectly. I have ladder rack on one side, a space in the middle for sheets of whatever you like and then on the other side I have a roof tube for carrying 3m length of pipe etc (this could be substituted for a awning type affair). I'm sure I could adapt it to have a roof tent as well. I'll post some pictures up if you like. Looks smart imo as well. |
