clutch / flywheel vibration at high revs
I wonder what the thoughts are on the following.

I have a TD5 all standard, I am getting bad vibration from the gearbox / clutch area at high revs. I have no Rev counter, so can only guess what the RPM is, but I would have expected that the engine would be the limiting factor at high revs.

its most apparent when in top gear, at 60MPH upwards i get a pronounced vibration. Also when changing up through the gears, i also feel lots of high frequency vibration from the gear stick.

I am thinking this could be the dreaded Dual Mass flywheel, any tips for narrowing down the cause ?

Check the propshaft UJs for play or seizure.

more information on this.

Changed the front propshaft, its made no difference.

The vibration occurs in all gears at high revs and load, when cruising at 70 its bad. Lifting off the accelerator removes the vibration almost immediately.

Also when in neutral and not moving i rev the engine and hear / feel vibration. So i am thinking this is not transmission / propshaft related. (engine has only done 70k miles)

Also on my list of things to check
1. engine mounts
2. crank shaft pully
3. flywheel (my current view of the trouble)

any ideas on how to find the root cause, without spending a shed load of time and money ?

I’m interested in this as well as I have a similar vibration on my Td5.
I’ve changed the flywheel, clutch and front damper but it is still there at higher speeds.
Have checked the props and can’t find any play, have also removed them to check the joints aren’t seized.

Mine turned out to be the transfer box , total saga trying to get to the bottom of it and replaced everything on the assumption that the “new” transfer box was good .
It turned out that it wasn’t but only after I had replaced the entire drivetrain .

My symptoms were slightly different in that I was getting a vibration in all gears and at all speeds . It did however get considerably worse the fastest you went .

You say you’re getting the vibrations in neutral at a standstill , try placing the transfer box into neutral as well and see if it makes a difference . https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

good point, i will try this tomorrow. it does sound like the vibration is coming from the front. But i know how deceptive these vibrations can be.

wow thats an expensive list of things to change for the issue still to happen.

Have you checked the injectors, i have read that an in balance can cause vibrations

a brief inspection of the mounts leads me to think they are ok. But i really do not know the best way to check.

Any tips ?

I have considered strapping a go pro under the car to see if the vibration is visible:) not sure how effective this will be .

Mine runs very well so I don't think it is an injector issue but will have a look.
Good shout about the mounts I know they can cause issues when they fail.
The front damper on mine was tired at 165k but I only replaced the flywheel and clutch as I had the gearbox out.
I can live with it as it's not too bad and can be improved by speeding up or slowing down slightly which is what made me think it was a balance issue somewhere.
It's just frustrating as I know something is not quite right but I can't find the issue.
I'm tempted to replace the props but not in a rush to throw money at the issue. Defender Td5 Commercial 2002

i have changed both front and rear prop, made a massive difference. Not completely smooth at high revs, but it is a 5 cylinder lump after all.

will work my way though other parts in due course, engine and gearbox mounts.
