United Kingdom 1985 Defender 90 2.5 Petrol SW Barolo Black
1985 90 petrol engine ID
Morning all.

My latest project is a 1985 90 2.5 petrol which should keep me out of mischief for a bit! I don't have much history on the vehicle and I am just sorting out the details of the engine fitted.

It probably seems a stupid question, however, the block is painted red which makes me think it could be a reconditioned engine? I don't think they were ever red from the factory but I stand corrected. It is on 160K which makes me think this could be the case.

Secondly there is no engine number in the usual place for the petrol engine and I cant find one anywhere else, why would that be? Would a recon engine have a number? There is no engine number on the V5. I am assuming it is the 2.5 (this is what is listed on the V5.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Cheers

John Thumbs Up

I have several 2.5 Petrol engines and it’s normal for the block to be painted red, similar colour to red lead primer.
Great engines in my opinion, I’m going to send one to be breathed on by ACR, bored out to 2.8l, updated head, SU carb etc😊

Thanks all for the replies, it seems then that the colour is standard I will have to do some more research on the engine number. I checked on the Glencoyne site and looked where he suggested it should be but it is blank. I have enclosed a few photos which might help.

I should really introduce myself it is a while since I have done any Landy spannering. The name is John I am near Malvern Worcs and have owned a few Land Rovers over the years including a Series 2 / Range Rover Classics and a Freelander. I fancied a new project after tinkering with classic bikes for a few years hence this 90 it is on the road and MOT'd just needs some fettling after the previous owner got fed up with it. He did a fair bit of work on it including new rear chassis, shocks / wheels and tyres & other bits & bobs. I will keep up the posts as there will no doubt be a few more queries!!

Cheers John

Thanks guys - found it, its a 17H which does ID it as the correct 2.5 engine. Watch out for the next exciting installment on fuel tank replacement!! Who needs Netflix!!

It's amazing how long the original 2L diesel block lasted!

Indeed it is, and the earlier 2.3 petrol engine in a Ninety is scarcer still.

This pic of one of mine shows the main visual difference to the OP's 2.5 photo: the orange filler cap on the rocker cover.

We used to call the orange filler caps on the later 2286s “carrots”
