2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Stornoway Grey
Drove it back this morning after a windy night camping on the hill!

13.6v at batteries rising to 13.8 after an hours drive engine running. Battery had 12.5 in one and 12.6 in the other (VSR joining them) at start of trip.

when i ran it static in the field Wed it was 14.2v.

so now dropped to 13.6v

i am thinking change alternator anyway. - thoughts? Cheers

Yes, Alternator voltage isn’t performing by the looks of those voltages.
Mine stays at 14.6v running, pretty much consistently.

I think it’s one of those things that like Blackwolf I think mentioned is typical of Defenders and likes to come and go making it difficult to pinpoint.

I’m pretty sure that the Alternator there is knackered and it’s been intermittent as it’s been on it’s way out.
Definitely swap it or it will let you down, if it wasn’t for the fact the west hung is warm the first cold weather we would have you’d be let down.
As it is, it could leave you stranded unless you have backup batteries and even then it won’t be charging both properly.

Bit of a pain I know, these things just happen unfortunately. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

changed the alternator.

Charges around 14.1, 14.2 after initial start then 30mins later around 13.7. I am assuming once battery charged it drops the rate? If load applied it momentarily drops 0.1v, heated front screen, then comes back up to where it was but still only 13.7.

Not had any repeat battery lights on and not had a no charge scenario repeat. Cheers

Might be worth trying another multi meter, just in case the one you have is reading low.
