Just come back from touring the USA. When driving at altitude over there (above 2500m)on changing gear there would be a slight delay before the engine revs dropped to idle. Is this just an altitude thing or signs of something else?

Are you saying it only did this at altitude? The reason I ask is that holding the revs slightly on changing gear is a well documented feature of Puma's and is designed to aid smooth changes. Darren

Ah, fair enough. I'm not sure why there's so much negativity about it, though. It works very well in my experience and in normal driving is invisible. Darren

I quite like it too but I think it’s made me lazy - hired a Luton van recently and my changes were awful until I re-learnt timing of taking my foot off the accelerator.

Yes mine only does it at altitude. It is 2.2 so OK to ignore it for now.

Let's just say that I am one of the (probably dwindling) number of drivers who is quite happy to drive a vehicle with no synchromesh at all, and even one with a centre accelerator or even no accelerator (and not many people can say that nowadays). This in effect means that I can drive virtually anything, whereas the modern generation who can no longer remember how to turn on the wipers or lights for themselves are pretty well stuffed in anything but the latest technology.
I am not saying being in the "modern" category is bad, but it is limiting and I know which I'd rather be in. Knowing how to use something correctly doesn't mean you have to use it; not knowing how to use it means that you cannot. |

I learnt to drive in a Series One so unless you were only going to use third and fourth you had to double de-clutch. I did have some driving lessons with a driving school that had a fleet of Vauxhall HA Vivas and was constantly being told off by the instructor for double de-clucthing. "You don't need to do that in a modern car". Not sure many people these days would refer to a Viva HA as a modern car

Had the clutch release pivot pop through whilst in Ethiopia. Drove for 3 hours without a clutch to get back to Addis Ababa. On my old 300TDI not the TDCI.
