A lot of it is due to the massive amount of vibration trailers endure and shock. It works connectors loose and things like that.
Water getting in sockets and things like that can be a factor too.

If you’ve got a Multimeter like I think you mentioned you’ll have two trouble testing to find out what was wrong. That’s assuming you don’t visually notice first anyways. Worn cables can happen too. Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️

Ireland 
I borrowed a trailer and when connected up to the Puma it blew some indicator bulbs on the Puma. Something dodgy with the trailer wiring. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali
2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu
2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai

Yup, I can now reliably blow a fuse every time I connect the trailer and switch on the lights!
