Running rough with the MAF sensor in, even if it's new!
Having some problems with my TD5 90 (15p) which I was hoping you kind folks might be able to help with. Out of nowhere it started running very rough, low on power, lots of smoke (smells of diesel to me), goes okay when I'm pulling away and working it, but as soon as you start coasting along in it you get big plumes of smoke coming out and all the power goes, sounds like a bag of nails.

Okay, so first thing I did was replace the injector loom and clean out the red plug with brake cleaner, there really wasn't much oil in there but I figured I'd replace it anyway as it's cheap and easy. Same problem still. Then I think, maybe the smoke is oil from the turbo, so I had a look at the turbo and it seems fine, minimal play in it side-to-side (maybe 1mm) and no play in and out. There's a little oil around the outside of the pipe from the turbo to the intercooler but I was expecting more.. Hmmm..

So I searched around on here and someone says unplug the MAF and see what happens, when I unplug the MAF tada! Car runs beautifully, it's a little low on power which I'd expect, but nice and smooth, no smoke at all. I thought that was the end of it, ordered a new genuine MAF sensor, put it in just now and went for a drive, running like a pig again Big Cry

I'm not sure what to try next to be honest! I pulled the brand new MAF out and took it for a drive, runs fine again without it. Any ideas lovely people? I've got a nanocom arriving tomorrow.

Certainly doesn’t seem right with the maf. On the bas tuning Website there is a section that tells you how to check if the maf is dead with a multimeter if you have one. Ray

Right, I'm an idiot. I just got the heat shield off the turbo to take another look and the waste gate was stuck wide open. I thought I had checked that when I looked inside the turbo but apparently not! Gave it a good lather in copper grease and wiggled it open and closed a few times and now it's all back to normal!

The symptoms to me didn't seem like they would have been caused by that, but there you go! MAF sensor was a total red herring, perhaps because unplugging it reverts to a tuned down map (mine is actually remapped as well) it just allowed it to run along fine with no turbo.

Another life lesson learned. Thanks a lot mk1collector, you are a gentlemen and a scholar. I'm going for a drive now! @tab.travels on instagram
