D2 cruise control switches are essentially plug and play on a TD5 Defender and you'll need a gadget called a speedo healer to adjust for your tyres and gearing. I'm sure I've seen threads on here with more details that would come up with a bit of searching. I know that Grafty, amongst others, has done this mod to his 90. Darren

Nice. Just bought a D2 CC switch and found a diagram. 4 wires so easy!

You'll need the healer.
The ECU needs to think it still has a 1.4 transfer box fitted, which means slowing down the pulses going from the speedo to the ECU. It needs this as there is a check between the engine RPM and speed, if there is a discrepancy - which you will have as you have a different transfer box AND oversized tyres - then the cruise control will not engage.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Like you are planning to do, I fitted the D2 switch on the column and used a Carling switch on the dash to turn off the cruise totally. You will definitely need a Speedohealer with your T-box. Cruise worked perfectly with normal gear ratios but I later fitted a recon box with a v8 5th gear ratio and it wouldn't work above 40mph.
Depending where you wire the Speedohealer will determine if it adjusts the speedo reading or just interferes with the signals that the ECU receives which in turn cause it to cancel cruise automatically because the pulses received are outside of certain parameters. Mine is wired to only affect the signal to the ECU since the 285 75 r16 tyres made the speedo read accurately against a GPS. Let me know if you want any pictures showing how the switch is mounted or the various ways to wire the Speedohealer depending on what you want it to do and I'll dig them out? I’ve added cruise control too and used the disco 2 switch but I also made a standard switch matching cruise on/off switch for the dash.

As Martin says, you will need a speedo healer. CC in the Defender is a great addition, although nowhere near as sophisticated as in the freelander but on long trips its lovely. As is oodles of sound proofing
Incidentally, if you are running up to 285/75/16 tyres and a 1.4 transfer box you do not need a speedo healer, or at least I didn't need to. You definitely need the healer if you have an overdrive or a 1.2 transfer box. Last I looked flat dog were the cheapest place to get a speedo healer. If you have any problems with the CC not functioning or is intermittent then check that the clutch, brake and crank switches/sensor are all functioning as they should, especially the clutch sensor. Also it is worth whilst you are working around the ECU to put in a direct earth cable from the ecu to the battery. CC instructions; Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

The tyres don't matter as the ecu doesn't see the difference. My CC works on my 235 85's and on my 35"Simexes. You will need the heeler for the different transferbox. Roel

I have cruise control with a roamerdrive, wired it in to the speed signal that goes to the engine ECU so it leaves the speedo untouched.
I have it on a 5pin relay so con flick a switch so it works with the overdrive engaged and disengaged. How have people with the Discovery switch mounted it on the column shroud? Cheers Will 2005 90 XS 1954 86'' Series 1 tilt |

So just to clarify, 2001 10p td5, will I be able to get cruise control working with the right parts? Or is this for later Ecu only?

You will need to trim a little from the metal bracket that the column shroud attaches to first so it doesn't interfere with the back of the switch once in place Click image to enlarge Cut a hole in the shroud for the back of the switch Click image to enlarge Then a small 90* bracket from a hardware store and a couple of self tappers Click image to enlarge Lastly file the mating face of the switch to suit the angles of the top and bottom parts of the steering column shroud Click image to enlarge Hope that helps

I think I have to show my CC setup.

I had the buttons horizontal first, but sand and mud came in the button and blocked them so now the sit vertical and that doen't happen annymore. This was my trial from 2009 and the wires are long enough to go to the steering column but I didn't take the time to do that yet.  Roel
