Stiff steering when accelerating
Developed a fault recently, the steering becomes quite stif when accelerating very noticeable when accelerating round a bend

I have fitted a Terrafima return to center steering damper a little while back but haven’t really tested it as such but I’m sure it’s fine.

Does it have a standard diff in the front axle?

This could be symptomatic of an imminent diff failure, especially if it has the fragile two-gear diff fitted (which it probably does). If you can't find any other obvious fault, I'd suggest jacking the front wheels off the ground and spinning the wheels and propshaft, being aware of any roughness, odd noises, or odd behaviour, and drain the oil from the diff checking for fragments, and checking whether the oil level was correct.

As one whose front diff failed and locked up solid on the road, take it from me that it is disturbing when it happens and could have serious consequences.

No noticeable noises, I’ve changed the oil a couple of weeks back and didn't notice any debris.

Will try the jacking up

The drain hole sits higher than the lowest point of the diff pan. Stick a magnet in the diff housing sump to be sure. Last year a couple of crown wheel bolts broke in our Td5. The sump was full of shrapnel of broken bolts and teeth, but the oil almost looked like it came fresh out of the bottle.
While you're at it, install a magnetic drain plug too, it's the same as in the LT230. Antares Treadwell, a MY06 110 Td5 in Chawton White

Could it have been the turbo pipe rubbing on the steering column? When accelerating should be highest boost I guess? 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Was trying to reply to this thread last night but just when it was nearly completed I accidently pressed the back button and lost it Rolling Eyes

Here it is again typed out a second time but at a keyboard this time instead of a touchscreen smartphone.....

Had issues with sticky/notchy steering about 12-18 months ago. It would feel like it was stuck/locked occasionally when accelerating out of roundabouts or corners and had to force (not quite force, but steer unexpectedly) the wheel to return to centre. Always felt like if I didn't correct the steering it would not self centre and I would just drive off the road.
First thought was 'Hello, I've been here before' so I suspected the steering column ujs so liberally oiled them, which seemed to fix things for a few weeks, but this was an illusion due to the intermittent nature of the occurrence. I then replaced the ujs, thought if I suspected them and was removing them for further inspection I might as well replace as no idea how old they were. Still no better and having ruled out other obvious causes like fluid level or belt problems I then got serious on the diagnosis.

As the problem seemed to be related to hard cornering I wondered if it was maybe a failing/failed swivel bearing so removed front wheels and trackrods then checked movement of each swivel. Both were silky smooth, as were all the track rod ends.

I then dropped off the steering damper and moved it through its full travel, again all smooth. I also removed the steering column again to double check the ujs and spin the steering wheel to check the upper column bearings. All good.

Was scratching my head by this point. Just by chance decided to remove the drag link from the PAS drop arm to check that ball joint and while it was off and the steering column was disconnected I moved the drop arm through its travel and BINGO! Steering box was notchy with some definite points through its movement, probably about 6 points and I guess the first notch either side of dead ahead coincided with where I had been getting the stuck steering feeling coming off roundabouts etc. Must have been a pitted bearing in the box and this also made sense as I had also been getting some twitchiness about the straight ahead position on motorways, was probably some effect in that position too.

I fitted a reasonable used box and the problem was gone. Check your PAS box in case this is your problem.
