Roof tent roof bars
Afternoon all

I’m after some advice please. We’re planning on doing the NC500 in September and have just purchased a roof tent for the trip. I have the galvanised LR roof basket already but I’d rather not go through the faff of lifting this on. Can anybody recommend a decent set of roof bars for the job? Some I’ve seen only just clear the roof so would not be any good given the tent fixings will need to clear the roof as well.

All advice as usual greatly received.

Thanks.

If you are just after roof bars, the Flatdog ones are reasonably priced - would get at least three to spread the load

I've always been pleased with my First Four roof bars. They're galvanised steel and very strong:

This is the third Defender that I've used them on. Darren

Darren, do the first four bars do any damage to the gutter or roof? Any nicked paint etc? I have some mantec roof bars I need to use occasionally and even with makeshift rubber gaskets I still seem to nick the paint on the gutter and it annoys me Big Cry Ray

No, they seem ok. They come with a rubber 'channel' that fits over each of the feet.

You have to be careful fitting them, of course. I usually lay a towel over the roof to avoid any accidental knocks. Darren

Thumbs Up That sounds good. It’s always the feet that just seem to nip the gutter enough to take the paint off on the mantec ones, I’ve tried fitting bits of rubber and foam sheet in between the gutter and feet but it doesn’t seem to work so I might have to pick up some first four ones Thumbs Up Ray

I use 3 Flatdog bars for a hard shell roof tent.
I find these great to use, easy to put on individually, then put the tent on top.
Use rubber between the clamps and the roof to avoid paint damage.
They're currently fitted at a wide spacing to carry long lengths of wood.

I previously used Mantec bars. After 3 years they were rusty and had damaged the roof rail paint.
The tent stayed on all year round too, it wasn't easy to take it off due to the fixings being concealed.

Another vote for Flat Dog bars, with adhesive foam on feet. Relatively cheap (I pick my 3 up second hand) and still look new 3+ years later. James

Are up rights available for any of these bars?

I like both brands of roof bar pictured but would be great to have to option of some uprights and lash points so that I can strap timber and ladders etc on.

I’ve found the bars online but can’t find what accessories are available.

Thanks Thumbs Up

Not for the First Four bars. I just strap things to them with an endless ratchet strap or similar. Darren

@mk1collector I use an old rubber innertube from a bike, just cut it to size with a slit for the clamps and it protects roof and rain seal. I’ve tried purchasing rubberised feet for the mounts but these all seem to either rot over time or destroy themselves when fitted. The advantage with the innertube is that it’s cheap and you can create many ‘feet’ from one tube. -------------------------------
