Puzzled as to why you'd baulk at paying for a VDO rev counter and then fork out a fortune for Stack gauges ?

Not sure I was Baulking at the VDO tacho......the tacho is the one that has to best match the original instrumentation as its fitted in the dash binnacle.

The Fourby unit and the VDO unit look very similar.

One is priced at £120, the other at £40......and I know the Fourby one will work in my defender.

Stack were the only gauges that I could get as a matching set (EGT / Clock / Voltmeter).....unless I ordered the VDO EGT gauge from Australia - so had to pay the price. 2000 D2 TD5 - ahhh bless

Alex - looking good with the Stack setup. Quick question - did you have any issues with the fuel gauge? Is it plumber into the standard sender? Was any witchcraft involved in getting it set up?

Cheers, Paul

Hi Paul,

It’s very easy to set up the fuel gauge. It uses the standard sender unit. The gauge has several ‘pre set’ ranges it can operate from and I found one of these was very similar to the LR sender so you can select that mode and it’s good.

But I did later use the custom setting where you empty the tank (or almost) and tell the gauge it’s empty, then fill the tank and again tell the gauge it’s full and it then locks in these readings to the gauge so it is the spot on accurate.

Cheers,

Alex

Sorry to pester folks but more questions...….

Fitted the Rev counter from Fourby - ACE works great, but VERY bright when lit up.

Next, fitted the LED lamps (again from Fourby) to the remaining instruments.....very disappointing.
The lamp holders have an existing green filter attached so 'muffle' the extra brightness from the new LEDs.

Set about what can only be describes as 'butchering' the speedo to get rid of the green filters and the results are......acceptable.

Set about doing the same to the fuel and temperature gauges and the results are not so good....and I think I might have busted the Fuel gauge as it now reads Full, when only three quarters full of diesel Embarassed

So might have to bight the bullet and replace the fuel and temperature gauges with VDO units so...….

Temp gauge - 40C - 120C range ok (?) & presumably have to pair up with appropriate sensor - (thread size?)

Fuel gauge - any fancy calibration required / new float sensor required etc (?) - seems the STACK unit an easy fit from Alex's response above.

Any takers please for the Thread size for the temperature sender unit (defender 300tdi) - Demon Tweeks couldn't advise .

Presumably its a direct swop out for the sender located under to Thermostat housing

Ahhh sorry!

However, it is still a 1/8 NPT thread (fairly common for sender units)

So, some progress...….

Mudconsole fitted out (on the face only, still need to sort out the 'rat's nest' of cables / relays required)

Also, got the new VDO gauges for Fuel & water temperature, with the Fourby Rev Counter in the main binnacle.

Waiting on Stack EGT on back order

I recently had a similar dilemma, though fitting in a Mud mini-pod dash mount. Ended up with a Stack EGT gauge - can confirm probe fits but needed a slight bend. Can take some photos later if you like.

It was expensive but no issues with fitting or operation.

Yes any photos of the installation would be great if not too much troulbe Thumbs Up

Finally got time to find these, really just show final position, not a lot during actual installation
