Not to mention that, generally, in the UK any roadworks need the traffic to be slowed down to 5mph at least 2 miles either side of the actual repair

Always reminds me of the military training manuals with pages marked "this page is intentionally blank".

Back in the day when I wrote a lot of technical documents and manuals I would sometimes replace the word "intentionally" with "unintentionally" or "inadvertently" just to see if anyone noticed. I do not ever remember anyone doing so! |

That reminds me of the night me and my two pals were going for a takeway after a few beers at our local. They were doing some street light changes and moves, so some of the road was coned off. What we decided to do, was cone off our work place. If they had been a diverted sign at hand, we would have moved that in place too. Sort of our way at getting back at the place for been a right pain to work for. ![]() In the words of my Good Friend, Gary Forrest 1980 -2025 " we will work something out" |

It is rumoured that back in the early 1970s when Oxford had introduced a particularly extensive and complex one-way system a group of students as a rag week prank flipped one single sign which had the effect of making it impossible to leave the city by car and caused gridlock. It supposedly took the authorities the better part of a day to figure out which sign it was.

There was a sign on a path at the back of a building where I did my apprenticeship that said 'WARNING: ICE AND SNOW IN WINTER" which I used to be amused by.
