That's a new term on me - but it's similar in utilisation (separate, independent, self supporting) that is relevant to the discussion I reckon. Smile JB

Just been looking at the Rivian website to see how far away they are from production. If Rivian can make a SUV and a Pickup on the same platform then why can't JLR make a new Defender pickup?

https://rivian.com/

The size of the Rivian and platform allows anything to be built. An suv, pick up, luxury car, etc. They just need a factory to match the production of the truck. JLR's platform for the Defender isn't suited for a pick up truck at the moment. They'd need to most likely redesign the frame or create a new one and have it crash tested, etc for it to be developed.

The new MLA platform will allow electrification, it will underpin the 2021 Range Rover. Eventually every JLR product will switch to it.

Whilst the MLA will allow electrification, it is not a dedicated EV platform, so I can't help thinking it's compromised from the very beginning. JLR are playing catch up and appear to be locked into being a platform generation behind the market leaders until well into the future ~ MLA rollout to all models is not due to be completed until 2025 and that was with a start in FY19/20 which has slipped.

personally I think the pick up looks really good.
front lights are a bit 'star wars' but could be a lot worse - its the first thing I'd choice to do differently.

I've even thought about placing a deposit on this and the cyber truck - not cos I can afford either but if you can pass your place on in the queue may be there's a chance of making a quick buck?

I don't want this to turn in to a Rivian thread (oh it already is, but we are on a defenders forum) but I want to be the first in the queue! Don't care if it is the SUV or the truck (though I am 51% truck/49% suv). No pre-orders for the UK though.

Someone mentioned earlier that the truck had no load capabilities. Not sure where they got that from, iirc it will tow 5000kg (above UK limit) and there are no published figures for the bed afaik, but they can't be small, so not sure where he/she got that impression.

Off-roading? More like Rallycross! Pretty awesome though.

Need to get rid of the wheelspin when lifting a wheel.

RE: Wheelspin. Since every wheel has its own independent motor you are not loosing traction on the other wheels. I guess the software could slow it down if it was spinning freely but you would still need to detect when it needed torque again. I don't think it is a big deal, unlike a system with diffs.

On their Model S, Tesla use the electronic stability control system to control the speed and torque of the spinning wheel. I guess Rivian uses a similar system on their quad motor setup.

As both the Rivian RT1 and the Tesla Model S both have insane amounts of torque available then controlling wheel spin would have been a major consideration in the design process. Defender 90XS SW

Quite, but why waste energy driving a wheel that doesn't have traction ; then there's the shock loading of a spinning wheel hitting the road and finding high levels of grip. All very mechanically unsympathetic.
