Is my gearbox on the way out?
I haven't driven my '08 110 much since March, so was surprised over the past few days how difficult it now is to select some gears.

It's a 2.4 TDCi with the MT82 6-speed gearbox. Reverse, and second are a bit of a handful to find; reverse especially so, with much clunking coming from the box when it does engage. The gear stick doesn't engage in it's natural position, and I have to push it much further to the left to find the gear. Might it be also be an issue with the clutch?

Is this normal for an 89,000 mile truck, or am I looking at an expensive event?

It could also be the clutch dragging.

Checking the gearstick lower assembly would be a good option I think, perhaps it is damaged as that will cause difficulty in selecting gears.
Might be worth looking before looking into the more costly side. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Have a look at the gearbox selector bias springs, it sounds like they need adjustment.

I had the same symptoms for a few days last time my clutch gave in. New oil, clutch and slickshift solved the issue. Shifted like a dream until now that its in the shop for a new clutch. Many moons after though Laughing

It sounds like it may be the clutch, and I've been quoted £1000 to replace it. Is that a reasonable figure?

It sounds reasonable, in my location its around $ 2500 usd for a definite solution with labor (shipping and taxes are brutal). Go all the way for a lof clutch or a clutchfix and never look back. Will cost more, but worth every penny and cheaper in the long run (no more replacements due to spring failures with good meat in friction plates). Im just in the process for upgrading to lof (my flywheel arrives today), went full kit with power sping and master cylinder upgrade. My last kit did 150 k km (AP), being very gentle on the clutch always.

Cheers

That quote was from in independent LR specialist I've used before in Bedfordshire.

I've had cheaper online quotes from 'normal' car garages. Would you trust a non LR specialist to do it? I'm in two minds about it.
