If I understand your question right you want to swap the electronic speed sensor over for a cable and clamp. That;s really easy as it is a straight swap. Take the bolt for the electronic speed sensor out, take the sensor out, put the cable in and put the clamb and bolt on and ready. There is no need to change out other parts. Roel

I am doing this as well. I have read that the thing the cable clamps into is a bit smaller than the do-dar that the speed sensor plugs into, which would seem a bit odd if that was true. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Absolutely not true, the speedo sensor is a straight swap for a cable and vice versa.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I am 100% sure it is a straight swap as I build a 1984 90 with a td5 drive train to be road tax free in the Netherlands. When I almost was finished our friendly goverment changed it to 40 years so then I rebuild it again to a 2001 commercial.

The square drive for the speedo is slightly smaller on vehicles which originally had a 2pin speedo pickup (late discovery 1 V8s and maybe D1 300TDis). We found this out when fitting a TD5 transducer to the discovery transfer box on my V8 project.

That's down to the speedo drive gear, and you'd typically run a different drive gear in a Defender compared to the Disco anyway due to large tyre circumference on the Defender Smile  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

So while we are the subject, and I need to do this at some point in the not too distant future, what do I need to buy here to adapt the existing LT230 which has been rebuilt by Ashcroft, to a Td5 style speedometer?

Do I just buy a YBE100530 unit (the green unit, number '1' in the above diagram), and bolt it on and plug it in? Where is the mythical coloured drive gear, inside the LT230? If so, are these changeable without dismantling the transfer box? 2005 Td5 90 XS

The speedo drive gear is in the hole that the cable came out of. Remove the cable, remove the top hat thimble from the hole (if it's been in there for many years it will be easier with hand brake back plate removed to improve access, I use a wood chisel to gently pry out the top hat), withdraw plastic drive gear.

One spanner if all comes apart easily, 2 spanners if the top hat is stuck.

Doesn't require the box pulling apart, it's basically down inside the hole on the rear housing

You need the correct coloured drive gear to match your tyres, list here:

Thank you gentlemen. I had better wait until I have finalised my tyre choice then, which is currently a tricky decision to make Smile My heart and my head are currently in a heated disagreement on size. 2005 Td5 90 XS

My phone gives me the correct speed at least that one is accurate if I change between my 235-85's and my 35"Simexes. Roel
