Fitting the Ashcroft CV to the halfshaft
Thanks to your assistance yesterday, I have moved past setting the swivel pin housing up, yeah! Bow down

Yet my incompetence appears to have no limits. How on earth does the CV fit to the half-shaft?

There is a loose fitting circlip near the end of the spline, and a floating collar which slides along the length of the splines.

The CV joint came pre-packed with grease, so I cannot see what the circlip is supposed to locate into. Pushing it on by hand has not had much success so far. Do I just grow a pair and hit it with a (soft faced) hammer until it clicks into place?

What is the floating collar all about, is this supposed to be where the seal on the end of the swivel hub is supposed to line up with, so that the shaft rotates inside the collar, rather than rotating on the seal? 2005 Td5 90 XS

Leave the collar where it is. To insert the shaft you need to squeeze the spring clip a little with a pair of needle nose pliers or similar. The shaft should just push in once you have done that.

Dont be tempted to reach for the hammer, you will end up damaging the clip or the lead-in on the splines.

Once the clip is inside the splines of the CV, it should freely push in right upto the spacer. The spring clip just opens up when it gets to the other side of the CV.

Hard to explain but hopefully that helps?

Cheers,

That helps enormously, thanks Steve. I thought there must be a cheeky trick to it - squeeze the circlip first, why didn't I think of that! 2005 Td5 90 XS

put the cv in a vice vertically.

use grease to centrally locate the sprung clip

line up splines push in gently until clip contacts the CV cup,

ensure clips is still central

gentle tap copper faced mallet on end of shaft

CV and shaft joined.

well thats how i have done it for the last 20 years never had an issue. Cheers

With standard shasfts and CVs did the ole drop fit.

Seat the shaft in the CV enough to hold it and drop it from about half a ft.

Works.
