Stainless steel exhaust for a v8 - recommendations?
I would like to order a stainless steel exhaust for a Rover v8 for a 110.

I require the full system, manifolds back. Its an ACR manufactured 4.8 litre variant, with fuel injection. When I look at companies selling the off the shelf solutions, Rimmer Bros. seem to distinguish between a 3.5 litre and 3.9/4.0 litre exhaust for some reason:

3.5 litre: https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-LR1040

3.9/4.0 litre: https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-LR1073

I assume their 'sport' range is potentially larger diameter pipes?

I can of course contact them and find out what the difference is, but before I do that and commit to quite an expensive purchase, are there any other options/recommendations from people?

If the vehicle was on the road, it would have been nice to have got a Griffiin Performance system custom made, but sadly its not (and with no MOT), and Griffin being at the opposite end of the country to me up in Staffordshire I believe, its not really practical.

ACR themselves suggested a Double-S system. I think I read a few reports of people having to modify the Rimmer system to fit, so maybe Double-S would be a good viable alternative?

Their website doesn't distinguish between engine sizes only listing the 3.5 litre, their performance system being:

https://stainlesssteelexhausts.co.uk/land-...st-system/

which also doesn't provide a price. The 4 week manufacture time is a little frustrating too, although the reality is the vehicle is no where near being ready within 4 weeks, so this is just a psychological issue really.

Are there any other off the shelf options people could recommend before I commit to one of these systems please? 2005 Td5 90 XS

I've had the Rimmer Bros system on my 101 for the last 20 years. Apart from having to replace all the U bolts with stainless items the pipework & box are totally solid. Some of the flange plates (12mm thick) appear to be non-stainless but are holding up well. I also fitted one of their systems to a Lightweight I had a few years back. At the moment my Td5 110 has a mild steel system on it, but when that needs replacing I'll be going to Demand Engineering for a stainless system.

I had one made for mine in 1994 and its still on. I've done nothing to it apart from the occasional jet wash along with the rest of the vehicle. Costs won't be relevant after so long but I think it was around £110 at the time so obvuilsy can't recoment stainless enough!!!
Can you put on a temp (cheap) mild system to give you the chance to get a hand built system?? 1984 90 V8 puma want to be.

Thanks for the suggestions.

The option of a mild steel short-termer is possible, but to be honest I hate having to do things twice, it seems a bit of a waste. I'll drop Rimmer Bros. a note to ask what the difference between their 3.5 and 3.9/4.0 systems is. They at least claim to have them 'in stock', so could potentially get them at short notice. 2005 Td5 90 XS

I built a 110 3.9 V8 HiCap some years back, had a rimmers "sports" system on that, was perfectly fine.

When I then built my Td5 110 some years later I grafted the middle and tail section onto that, although did ditch it later on as it had too much noise with the Td5... sounded nice but on a long run got on my nerves.

But even after that amount of time (was probably 15 years) it still looked good.

I used Demand Engineering on my 3.5 V8, hand built so not cheap but sounds amazing! I stuck with double baffles as I didn't want too outragious and increased bore from 2 to 2.5" as they advised. Great guys to deal with, proper enthusiasts and only 5 miles down the road so obvious choice for me.

I suggest you consider ceramic coating on your headers. Even the stainless ones will degrade over time. This way you could also consider mild steel headers like Janspeed. m

All depends how much you want to spend.
Do you really need headers.
In your situation with a relatively low reving engine, what about a big bore 2.5" system using the usual manifolds, and a suitable "straight through" muffler that will let you hear that V8 "noise" when you want to.

Ah I had not spotted that V8GPC, thanks for pointing it out.

I have dropped them an email yesterday to ask, no response yet but its still early days.

Ceramic coating did appeal, not on longevity grounds but on keeping temperatures down in the engine bay. Not sure how I would actually go about getting them coated though, they are quite big things to drop in the post to send them somewhere. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Rimmer's didn't back to me by email, so I registered an account with DoubleS (https://stainlesssteelexhausts.co.uk/land-...st-system/ to see what their price was.

It was just short of £1100 which seemed a bit on the pricey side, but then a couple of hours later they contacted me to thank me for registering, and offering 40% off the listed price while we are all at home on lockdown.

So a quick deal later and I have a full system including manifolds being delivered for £585, can't really argue with that - and should be here by the end of the week - winner Very Happy 2005 Td5 90 XS

Really good result, especially with the headers (which I don't have) well done!

Has it arrived, first thoughts?? 1984 90 V8 puma want to be.

Heh... no not arrived. The friendly lady on the phone stated that she "thought" it was in stock on the shelf, so should have been delivered last week - but nothing has arrived yet.

I've spent the week moving the garage around and preparing to start bolting bits back to the chassis, so not having to store an exhaust has been beneficial, but it would be nice to know when to expect it. I'll get on to them next week to find out the status - I'm not in any desperate hurry for it. 2005 Td5 90 XS

I had the same 4.8 ACR in my previous 50th anniversary, i used Hedman Headers (unfortunately not stainless) and it was a reall krypton factor puzzle to fit them, then drove down to a local place and they fabbed up a stainless system for me. The journey with just the headers fitted is something i'll never forget...unbelievably loud!

Well it arrived well packaged in a big ass box:

and opened it revealed everything I hoped I had ordered, including a fitting kit:

First impressions are very positive - especially considering the very keen price. Not entirely sure on the diameter of the pipe, very quickly measuring with a tape measure the outer diameter of the tail pipe rolled section is about 3", so I guess its a bit less than that (2.5"?). Nicely polished tail pipe too.

Hopefully the single silencer isn't too loud, but then its a v8, if you can't hear it what was the point in getting an engine which only does 15mpg anyway?

I will have to weld on a flange for the O2 sensor, I guess on the section where the two pipes combine, assume a GEMs engine does run two O2 sensors which I assume not. Hopefully I will remember my TIG welding lessons from last year well enough to not ruin it Smile 2005 Td5 90 XS
