Penman Trailer 1130KG Drop Tail - Camping Conversion
Hello

Getting a bit old to make the trip to the Autohome on top of the 90, plus not easy after a few beers, so looking to move it a bit closer to the ground. I am considering converting a trailer as the ready made ones seem very expensive. Not looking at anything fancy, just a place to house the Autohome and some storage underneath. I have been looking around and like the look of the Penman Trailer.

Have located a couple of sites selling what look to be nearly new gear and wondering if anyone has had any dealings, good or bad, with either MOD Sales in Witham or John Richards Surplus? I would be travelling a fair distance to either so want to make sure I pick the right supplier. Has anyone converted a Penman which you could share pictures of to see what might be possible?

Also, despite looking at many threads on this site and elsewhere, still cannot find a definitive answer to the legality of using a NATO hitch on my civvy 90.

Cheers

Do you mean a Dixon Bate NRC2051 tow hitch? - as available to civvies over the counter at a variety of 4x4 parts retailers Whistle

The NATO hitch was type approved a few years ago and so is legal to use. Darren

I've purchased vehicles and plant machinery from both MOD Sales (used to be Witham Specialist Vehicles) and L Jackson & Co, both were very helpful and would happily recommend either of them. 2005 Td5 110 Hardtop

im not knocking penmans ( i have one) but i ran my hard shell on a 750kg trailer.tows well behind anything i own and at any speed. easy to move as is the penman.

ive sold my tent and trl now but i liked the lower height of a smaller trailer.

plenty of seller shave them and many are unused.

be careful as some sellers have double stacked them and they have hydraulic brake which don't like being stored this way

Look at Brightwells auctions who have the MoD contract, you can get a penman for £6-700; the auto reverse makes them way better than the previous widetrack mk III sankey. the NATO pintle is perfectly legal and type approved (email me i can send type approval pdf) but make sure it is free to rotate ON AND OFF ROAD as a penman eye does not rotate. also make sure you have the backing plate between pintle and DB slider plate or cross member if direct fitting (for the breakaway cable), and make sure you have the load spreader plate on the inside of the rear cross member. Thanks, will take a look at Brightwells as that is quite a saving from what I have seen. I have picked up a Dixon Bate NATO pintle, towball plate and twin Pin Slider to mount.

Much cheaper to buy a penman from Brightwells who now have the MoD contract. 110 Defender 300tdi & Penman trailer with ally exped top and roof tent
