I have seen a wheel space fail first hand, on a diahatsu fourtrak. Wing totally destroyed and large divot in the road, luckily it was only doing 15mph. It had just done a 90 degree turn out of a side road and failed when straightening up. Studs pulled out of the spacer from memory.
On a related note, my brother has my old 300tdi 90 county with factory fit freestyle alloys. I put some BF Goodrich MUd terrains on for him, never adjusted the lockstops, but they used to rub slightly on full lock. Come MOT time they failed it for rubbing tyres and instead of adjusting the stops, sold him a set of wheel spacers to get it thought the mot  (he is not mechanically minded, first I knew of it was when I saw it a few weeks after the mot with spacers on) |

Highly recommend the Toyo Open Country MT (I have in 255x85R16) despite being a mud terrain they are surprisingly quiet and well behaved on the road, I've been very impressed with them. Cheap too, I paid £105 each delivered. James

Interesting, but this suggests to me that (a) it was not a good quality spacer and (b) it was probably a pretty thick spacer. Good quality spacers will use headed fasteners screwed into the spacer from the back, which cannot pull out (for this reason avoid anything thinner than about 30mm since it won't be thick enough to accommodate the fastener head). If the studs pulled out, it suggests that they were threaded into the spacer, which would not be good practice. |

Hi BM, I would prefer tyres that a better mannered on the road, that way I am more likely to use the truck more. So, the reasons to consider changing are, A better stopping distance on the road – this is emergency stops as I don't drive the truck like a car. Lets face it, you are not in control of anyone that decides to step/pull out in front of you. I have not had to do an emergency stop yet and may never have to, but I would like the confidence the tyre will stop in a reasonable range. It would be nice to see a test comparison with other tyres, but I don't think that exists. These are re-moulds so will wear far quicker than new tyres. Whilst they have a reasonable tread at the moment, I don't want to take them past a useable green lane depth. When these wear down, if I only have one set of tyres, I wont replace them with the same style. So having a “daily” set of tyres and having these for occasional use on lanes may be an option. These are noisy and drift a bit. They are not the best balanced (which I think they are known for), but I don't do too much long distance or fast driving anyway so I can probably live with that. However, with these tyres I would not want to go too far due to noise and their behaviour on the road, so with better (road use) tyres I may well use the truck more. The Insa Turbo web site shows these as 95% off road and 5% on road, which I think says a lot! I fully understand and agree with what you are saying BM and at this point I am exploring the options. I will fit the wheels with the road tyres on when I get them and see what I think – but to do that I have to be able to drive the vehicle, and with this virus lock-down I don't know when I will get the chance!!! I did think of that James. I saw one on the shelf and almost got it but now due to lockdown (and not wanting to catch anything) I have not been in the store since. My other thought was that the tyres were probably all nice and expensive where I am more likely to go for budget!

They certainly do that. I had a set that I bought and ran for a while on my Tdi 110 when it was new, but I really couldn't live with the road manners so I changed them for BFGoodrich MTs. Going back to the original question, 235/85R16, 265/75R16 are both factory sizes on standard suspension. I've had 265s on alloys off and on with several of my vehicles over the years, and it's a good fit. The 255/85R16 size is also popular although I have never had any personally as they don't suit the soft conditions here so much - if you go bigger it tends to be for width here, so 33x12.50R15 is the upgrade size.
Likewise - and that they are £240 each! 
An old 90 we used to have had a set of these on in 6.00x16. Honestly some of the most useless tyres ever made in almost every situation. They belong on a trailer! --- 2006 Defender 110 SW 300Tdi • 2011 Ford Ranger XLT crewcab • 2015 Defender 110 Station Wagon Utility TDCi |

Here's my old 90 on 265s/Freestyle alloys. I always liked the combination on a 90.
