Spray Painting Advice
Considering the amount of free time currently on the plate, I’m going to replace my RDX aircon panel with a genuine one that I’ve bought from the abyss that is eBay. The RDX one has cracked and has never fitted properly from day one, so much so that the bonnet needs a right old slam to get on to the second latch.

The genuine one that I have has come in black primer on the front of it and white on the back. My first question is, is it worth trying to have a go with a rattle can? I’ve got the correct colour paint and clear coat in rattle cans already. Second, would I be better off just taking it to a paint shop? Third, if I did rattle can it, what tips/tricks might help me? My experience of spraying things are limited and mostly extends to using dinitrol/waxoyl. So any advice would be seriously appreciated! Bow down

Thanks in advance and stay safe out there! Charlie

If you can do the work somewhere warm and dry, I’d have a go with the rattle cans. Spray paint doesn’t like cold or damp. You’ve nothing to lose, if comes out crap just rub it down and have another go. Alternatively have a go at learning to spray with a gun like I currently am https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic70880.html 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Good results are obtainable from rattle cans on smaller surface areas. I’d never consider trying to spray a door panel with a can for example. I feel you would be fine with the AC panel.

Warmer days are best with little/no breeze - even if working inside your garage.

As with most things, good preparation pays dividends. Not just your work piece but the environment too. Clean and clutter free.

And to get a professional finish, don’t forget a clear lacquer top coat. I apply 3 light coats of lacquer and am happy with the finished result.

My work in progress this morning.....

I'd certainly have a go with the rattle cans seeing that you've already purchased them and also you may not be able to find a paint shop open at the moment.

I'd have a go at painting the rear side and if you make a dog's breakfast of it then try a paint shop or as mentioned above learn how to use a spray-gun. Just remember that spray painting is a combination of both art and science and you've got to get both right for a perfect finish. At least your practising on a small surface area of a grille rather than a bonnet Cool Defender 90XS SW

OK, thanks for the advice chaps! I’ll have a crack with the rattle cans then! It’s windy here at the minute but hopefully there should be some semi-acceptable weather next week. Thumbs Up That’s a good idea about trying on the backside first, Discomog! Charlie
