Quick question on the back of this, the recovery driver made a comment on how I would not want a power steer failure with my smallish, non oem steer wheel. Is that the reason the OEM steer wheel are of a larger diameter and does anyone have any concerns over such happening. 1990 200tdi conversion 90

That has to be rubbish, the only time you'd have trouble would be a low speed or stationary manoeuvring - it seems not many people these days have driven a non power steering car so don't realise the difference in force required turning the wheels when stationary or moving.

If you are at all worried get someone to tow you around on a rope with no engine running.

Low speed or stationary issue only but equally most people can muscle the steering round on a sports wheel in a defender. Gets worse the bigger the tyres are but never had an issue with a small momo and 35,12.5,15 max is creepys Hold my beer and watch this!

Starting to rebuild, thought a bit of wire brush and paint would cheer me up

The swivel ball is oozing one shot past the seal. I think I have no choice but to carry out a full renewal, get a kit ordered 🙁 1990 200tdi conversion 90

I had a swivel seal doing just that. I'm planning a full rebuild anyway in the not too distant future, but in the meantime I didn't want to risk it getting any worse, so I went for the 'field repair' option which I'd found online - basically cutting a seal and the retaining plate, fitting them round the axle, glueing the seal and its spring back together and bolting up the retaining plate.

I did make sure that the cuts in the seal and retainer didn't fall in the same place, and were up toward the top of the ball.

It's been maybe 6 or 7 months and it's stayed good.

I wouldn't leave it forever, and it might not be the time to consider it given what you're doing anyway, but I'm just saying it can work as a temporary measure which could get you back on the road faster until you're more ready to do the job properly. Obviously there's the cost of a seal and plate, but it might make sense. It did for me at that time. Donald

Thanks, it won’t take too long to strip back down. I am caught between just changing the seal or the full swivel ball etc. The ball looks good no corrosion but it would wind me up if I just replaced the seal and it continued to leak 1990 200tdi conversion 90

Yup, I can understand that. I've got new swivels to go on, but both of mine are just beginning to get pitted, so it's been an easy enough decision. I think they've been on for about 15 years though (unless I'm forgetting something in the meantime) so I don't think that's too bad. Donald
