Not sure it'd be a cheaper solution than a pre-heater in the long run. One of the principle benefits of a pre-heater is that it reduces the engine wear associated with cold starts.
Apart from that, a 2.5 litre diesel on tickover is going to take an age to reach a decent temperature, so fuel consumption will take a hit. what options are there for pre heaters i have seen the kenlowe pre heater but what others, i take it we are talking engine preheating not the esbacher heaters which just heat the interior, i think thats right ? |

no you can get epersbacher and webasto and depdneding on which model both makes will heat engine coolant and the interior. in low temps as lra says diesels take a very long time to get to temperature and use bags of fuel to do it. but for the uk, water heaters arent required and are a luxury really

Both Eberspacher and Webasto make fuel burning engine pre-heaters. I had a Webasto version fitted to a 300tdi Disco a few years ago and it was excellent. Mine came with a remote control key fob with a huge range, but you can also get them with timers and even kit that means you can trigger them with your mobile phone.
Thirty minutes or so of running time would have both the engine and interior nice and toasty. There's nothing more satisfying than walking out to a warm, defrosted car whilst your neighbours are still scraping off the ice  They do use fuel though and, depending on your usage pattern, this can add up. When I had mine, I used it at the start and end of each day when going to work. However, as work was only a couple of miles from home, the fuel used by the heater became a significant percentage of my total consumption. In my case though, the main reason I fitted one was to mitigate the effects of all those short journeys with a cold engine and on that score it worked perfectly.
I'm considering a Kenlowe Hot Start for my current 110 before the winter. It is a compromise as I can only reap the benefit when at home to plug it in, but as it costs about a quarter of a Webasto or similar fitted, it's one that may, for me, be worth accepting. what sort of price are the kenlow fitted, have done a google but do not seem to be any for fitted.
i no longer have my garage so no way im going to sit and freeze this winter whilst waiting for landy to warm up. hell the way the summers going may need it bfore then !! |

Not sure about fitted, but a bit of research last night suggests that the unit itself is about £280.
When I last boght one, about 13 years ago  , they were about £160, so they've gone up quite a bit since! Darren

cannot find any one that sells them as fitted, perhaps a DIY product, its just that i dont do DIY. Those days are long gone |

I'm sure that any half decent mechanic should be able to fit them if you were to provide the unit. They aren't particularly complicated - it's making the installation neat and tidy that's the trick. Darren

some diesel freelanders had a pre heater fitted as an option perhaps one of those could be sourced at a good price? DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

The Freelander unit is made by Webasto. However, whilst it's a good unit, it's unlikely to be suitable for a TD5 or Puma engine. Webasto make a range of different heaters that take account of engine sizes and, more importantly, fuel pressures. Darren

an epersbacher is about 800 quid plus fitting, though you can DIY of course. DG has a thread in which he talks about putting in a webasto, and whilst I don't like the under body mount he used, his detail is really good.
there is a guy on ebay (cant remember his handle) who refurbishes and sells webasto heaters, if you do a search you ll find him. trouble with buying a used one from ebay not from him is that you never know if all the parts are there and some are expensive to buy on their own. |
