Wales 2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 HT Zambezi Silver
Rear shock absorbers
I know this is a subject that has many threads and I have read through a few of them (honest) but I just wanted some clarification.
I have a 2010 90 HT with 86k miles and it has a thudding, knocking noise from the rear load area. I have a bit of movement in the door but I don't think it is the cause.
I have play in upper and lower shock bushes so am going to start there but my question is - will upgrading the shocks help the crashy ride from the rear.
I'm aware that for the most part, changing the springs is the best option but has anyone changed their shocks and had a decent change in the ride?

Ps, is there any other thudding causes I may have overlooked?

My 90 SW had a new suspension setup completed last month... I think the most noticeable changes were actually from the shocks (Fox 2 adjustable) and the anti roll bar, although I went for same height progressive springs I didn't particularly notice a massive difference from them. I had these changes done in different stages so I could try things out and get a feel for what I wanted.

I'm over the moon with my final setup and although it's not one of the cheapest offerings I wouldn't hesitate to do it all over again if I had to.

(Other mods on top of the above which were fitted were the Gwyn Lewis Sumo Bars, and Old Man Emu steering damper and Gwyn Lewis turrets which I'm sure impact the over all ride as well)

Recently replaced all my dampers and springs with standard ones. I also fitted spring isolators top and bottom of all the springs. Made a hsge difference to the ride, no more crashing and banging like before.

Thats refreshing to hear. I'm thinking that at 86k miles, my original dampers must be pretty tired so would like to renew them. The fox shocks that you run, are they with the remote Res?

I'm hoping that is the cause. Based on the mileage I would like to replace them complete, especially if there will be a noticeable difference in the ride.

I have the same set up as IGP.

Or at least similar.
Genuine springs, genuine castellated isolators top and bottom on the springs.
Genuine shocks, and bushes.

Yes it is, I fitted Genuine 90 HT springs myself. I replaced the spring seats as well whilst at it.
On a 90 you can fit the castellated isolators top and bottom all around like I have but on a 110 I believe you can on the front but on the rear you can only use the wrap around spring isolator.

On the rear I fitted the wrap around isolator as well. On top of the castellated ones but if I did it again I’d leave that out as the rear sits a tiny bit higher than it need have been really.

Very happy with this set up, it has eliminated a lot of extra road noise and vibrations. Especially on rough unsurfaced routes like Byways and things like that.
But it doesn’t feel at all vague either.

Yep those are the ones, probably a bit over kill on all four corners but having driven another 90 with the same setup it was an easy decision

What mileage was your Def when you replaced?

Mine has done about 190,000 miles. However, when I purchased the car it had HD springs with a 2" lift and gas dampers. It was a very hard ride.
