Android tablet - best navigation app?
Hi there

I have recently got a Lenovo 8" tablet with GPS. It takes micro SD cards. I have full uk mapping on micro SD cards.

I would like to know what is the best app to run on the android for green laning and walking?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Roy

I use OS Maps (from Ordnance Survey, not MemoryMap) for walking - £20 per year for whole UK down to 1:25000. Amazing bargain price. To download maps for offline, you need to create a route, then download the route - bit of a pain, but cheaper than paying for the OS Maps that have the scractch off panel for full download. Alternatively, hook into your phone for data connection.

For navigation, it's Here Maps. It's free and allows download of pretty much everywhere in the world.

For green lanes - no idea (sorry).

I really like Locus Maps Pro, although I use it for off-tarmac abroad not the uk. You can import your own maps or it has a built in map store with a huge choice of fairly inexpensive maps to choose.

Incidentally, for on road use, the Tom Tom App for Android works really well on a tablet, especially if you have a day connection for the live traffic. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

if you have the Older OS maps from Memory Map, Alpine Quest the paid for version supports the reading of these (at least the version I have does). I think you can also do off line maps of areas as well. 1999 Defender TD5 110

I have used a samsung note for several years with View Ranger for off-road and remote driving, and its worked very well,
I have Co-Pilot for sat nav use - with all the overseas maps on - Thumbs Up

however I boiled the battery when in Slovenia by leaving it in the window when shopping so it has been replaced by a google nexus which works well but takes AGES to lock onto the GPS satellites - looking to upgrade to an apple iPad as that seems to do a better job but not able to use my engine management apps ..

Pondering if its worth it to try and change the battery on the Samsung ? Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html

I use maps.me for good detailed maps. And offline maps and navigation for navigation from A to B.

Both are free and update the maps regularly.

Maps.me does navigation too but I like the other more. However Maps.me works better in remote area's like Kurdistan or similar. Roel

I have used the OS Maps app for some years now. I tend to buy the map tiles for wherever I am going to be driving, much like I used to buy the paper maps. I find it does everything I need it to for the UK, and have the maps available on both Galaxy phone and my Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4, using the X-clamp RAM mount on the Mudstuff grab handle mounting.

I have a subscription to OS maps and used to use a brilliant app called MM Tracker which used the Memory Map maps but unfortunately it doesn't seem to work with later versions of Android. Now I use Alpine Quest for green lanes and it reads the older Memory Map maps, I think it was £6.99 but well worth it Thumbs Up Cheers Ian
