TD5 Crank but no start
Defender TD5 had problems when starting but did usually start after 2/3 attempts when hot or cold.

Now after changing the starter motor it is cranking but not starting. Crank Position Sensor wiring checked and giving good resistance levels & continuity.

Even wrapped the sodding thing in tin foil to keep out any interference on the new wiring I put on the end of the plug side. N

Decided to finally sort it out once and for all today by changing starter and checking wiring for Resistance and continuity all perfect but now, won’t start at all.

Get the odd error code saying crank signal noisy but don’t understand why as everything seems fine! New non genuine CKP sensor fitted about 15000 mile ago.

At my wits end with this thing now... any help appreciated before I decide to cut the sodding vehicle up. Td5 Cairns Blue Defender 110

Also check the spacing, mine was slightly out after changing the clutch and DMF caused all sorts of strange running issues / not starting. I even changed the crank sensors with no change after I think low speed noise without any change fitted the correct spacer and it was perfect again. Mr. Green

Try bump starting it, if it goes straight away it's your starter motor, seen it a few times.

Even if they sound healthy turning over it's not apparent until its bump started.

What happens is the starter motor starts arching inside and this electrical noise is picked up by the crank sensor due to the proximity of both. It makes the crank sensor see noise and then the injectors dont do their thing.

The reason it will start when you knock it off and on again is everything resets between cranking when you toggle the key. Once it see's the noise you can crank it till the battery is flat and it wont go. 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

Cheers Gazman, I already looked at earth connections and suchlike so I've been thinking along those lines myself for a while, I have tried the bump start trick and yes, it seems to start straight away. Looks like a starter motor is next on the list of stuff to buy.

Trouble is, I don't use the Defender much since I got my Freelander 2, it's only on the odd occasion if I need to move a trailer or collect a load of coal so it gets forgotten about till then, I think I'll get a tow ball fitted to the FL2 and flog the D90 once I've fixed it, it'll save a few bob on the tax and insurance then.

The ecu needs at least 9 Volts, If it doesn't get that it will turn over but won't start. If the battery is at the edge it might sometimes just start but most likely not directly.

I just refurbished my startermotor, one bearing was gone, I don't understand how it still was able to start. I changed both bearings and changed the contact points. And also important changed the grease in the gearbox. I could feel the difference while turning it by hand.

I thought that my battery was on it's end too but now pulls it with eas. Roel

Thanks to all who replied - problem solved Very Happy

It was the starter motor causing the problem, replaced it today and now it starts instantly on the first flick of the key Thumbs Up
