DRL wiring to ignition live
Probably a silly one, but it has me thinking. After a good search on the forum I'm still stumped.


I'm 100% buying a bumper with DRLs in the next few days (Just not sure which one yet)

I know you need to wire them up correctly so they dim with the side lights and go off with the mian beam. All ok.

First question is, where is the best place to actually take the power from for bumper mounted DRLs? Model Puma 2.2.

Do most controllers know the difference between alternator charging battery and static parked 12v battery. If so I assume i can run power directly from the battery box.
2) Is it therefore best to add another fuse/terminal box to the battery box? Any recommendations?

3) What's the best/neatest/most reliable route to take?

4) Or do i need to find an ignition live feed. In that case, where is the simplest / best option.

I'm assuming the DRLS will have an input for the side lights and main lights so wil just need to tap into these signals for them to do the legal thing.

I'm happy to wire the things up and am not totally inept. Smile just want to get my head around it in advance so I can get things prepared.

First thing I always do is order a blue sea A/B fuse box and ignition sense module from Tim at mobile centre. Just makes it dead simply to add things Andy

I am pretty sure the twisted DRLs come back on with full beam?? Andy

So from battery I use one of the fuse boxes to basically make things tidy
Then use an ignition live module to turn thigns on with the alternator.

Will be adding heated seats in the back for the wee ones this winter, so need ot think ahead. (don't laugh, it's one up on the wifey with her rr sport as she can't put them in.)


Just to be idiot proof, do i need the below?

I use this one. Single ground, and then A for ignition and B for permanent.

Just bought a VSR sensing relay. HCC DUAL 'VOLTAGE SENSING' SPLIT CHARGE RELAY (VSR) 12v 140amp Pt.no.VSR12140HCC

Equivalent to DURITE 0-727-33

The ones from mobile centre were 100’s so took a chance with one from the bay.
However there is s warning about Smart alternators. Which I assume the Puma 2.2 is most certainly not.


IMPORTANT NOTE:-VSR relays are not suitable for vehicles with 'smart' or 'intelligent' alternators. Vehicles having engines complying with Euro5/6 or later emissions standards and/or incorporating regenerative braking will almost certainly be fitted with such alternators (check with your vehicle supplier). Such vehicles should use a 'battery-to-battery charger' device rather than a VSR (see the Sterling Power Products devices featured in our EBAY shop such as item no.182756980530 ).


Anyone had any issues fitting a VSR relay to a Puma?

I've got one which is undoubtedly the same as that internally and it works absolutely fine. The alternator on a Puma is not in any way 'smart' in the way that description means.

I bought a bumper with Ring DRL'S. Two wires go to the battery terminals and the other to the live feed on the side light. The wires from the bumper DRL lights go to a control unit which I mounted to the inside of the panel on the intercooler side just behind the grill and from there to the battery. Have done two Puma's. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
