Hi I’m experiencing a similar fluctuation but it goes up into red and I loose power then it final settles on cold after 20 mins of driving. A friend mentioned he had heard that wording over gear box may be causing the issue ? And advice please ?

I replaced the temp sensor at the front of the cylinder head. Take a look at the last pic on page 4 for the location 1999 Defender TD5 110

If it's a wiring issue from the ECU to the gauge, an intermittent full deflection would suggest the coolant signal wire is being shorted to 12V.

The fact you're losing engine power suggests the actually it's the ECU seeing an overheat from the coolant sensor and reducing power to compensate, as well as throwing the gauge into the red.

I would swap the coolant sensor as a first port of call - ERR2081 - they are a few quid.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Hi - I had exactly the same problem and mine was arcing contacts on the main relay under the driver seat - If you remove each relay (3 to 5 of them depending on kit) and check for any burnt contacts or if its dark you may see the arcing going on like I did.
