Fog Light Illuminated when Turning
Does anyone know if it is possible to retrofit the system, used on modern cars, of turning on the appropriate fog lamp when turning? I don't know the name of the facility or how it works but there must be a kit or something. Peter

I had this on a Skoda Octavia and thought it was a good idea. The Focus I had after had the same principle but it was built into the front headlight unit.

I'm not sure how you would detect the turning of the wheel to switch the light on and off?

On a side from this, it did cause a couple of issues (on the Octavia, where it was built into the Daylight Running / Fog Light cluster) where, mostly old people, would mistake the light coming on for an indicator at roundabouts. I know it isn't yellow, but that's how it was!

It would be very difficult (it might be possible on a late Puma with DSC using the yaw sensors though).

A bigger mystery in my mind is why anyone would possibly want to retrofit the most useless feature to appear on any motor vehicle since dim dim to a vehicle which isn't already afflicted with it!

They are useful for low speed manoeuvring where there is little or no artificial light. Driving at any speed, yes, pretty useless.

A lot of modern cars have headlights that follow the steering wheel.

They have to keep dreaming up new stuff to get people to buy new vehicles. This is why the Defender sold in such low numbers. If they put more shiny bits on every year, it would have sold more. Instead, Land Rover successive owners missed the boat by letting the vehicle owners put the shiny bits on and then they just kept their vehicles and didn’t upgrade.

To my knowledge, the first car with directional headlights was the Citroen DS, so it’s been around for donkeys. Stunning motor that; proper french flair of old.

I can remember seeing in about 1965 an Hispano Suiza with a beautiful coupe de ville body dating from around 1920 which had steering headlights, so they have been around for a very long time although I think the DS was the first production car with them. The Hispano, like the 1921 Ghost my father had at the time, also had a lever to dip the headlights, located near the gear lever and handbrake by the driver's right knee, which tilted the headlights. As I remember the Hispano, which belonged to a Norfolk family and was one owner from new, had right hand drive.

Although steering headlights have some merit I don't personally think that the foglight effect has any benefits all since the pool of light is too close to the front of the car to be any use at all, and if anything distracts the driver from the things he of she should be looking at. They also seem to cause massive confusion at roundabouts in areas with large senile driver populations.

Pointless, as are drls, curse of the modern motoring world, same as massive built in blind spots, invisible indicators, and dazzling over powerful blue headlights, and no not the illegal upgraded ones, the standard "approved" fit ones on many newer vehicles Rolling Eyes

What you need is a Helphos searchlight which attaches to the inside of the windscreen by a suction cup and can be operated by either the driver or your passenger. No self respecting boy racer in the 1960's would be without one.

Yes stunning to look at.
But they can be a bit of a pig to work on. I know I worked on them for years. A lot of the engine jobs, you removed the spare wheel which sat in front of the engine,climbed in and started to work on them. Thumbs Up
