Scotland 2015 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 HT Fuji White
Mantec Spare Wheel Carrier
Well Gents, fitted the above carrier to my new 90 five years ago, and guess what! The dreaded ferrous oxide has started. The NAS step was horrendous so that has been removed, galvanised and powder coated and refitted. Now the attention is on the carrier. Suggestions would be appreciated. Should I remove strip, galvanised and re coat, replace like for like or go for a more expensive single attachment carrier?

Constructive suggestions welcome!

Both are valid options. Given that you've already drilled holes for it, I'd be inclined to refurb what you already have. Darren

Gents do you know if the Nakatanenga will fit with the NAS step?

I know I had problems removing the step as I’ve got an additional fuel cell fitted that restricts access to the rear crossmember.

Perhaps a refurb of the original may be the best option as the holes are already in the capping!

Sorry, I cannot help with that , although I have the Naka carrier I do not have the step.

I've got what was a Scorpion Racing rear carrier for those with good memories. I took it off last year after it was on for probably 10 years and was disappointed to see pretty much all the power coating flaking off. I've had it soda blasted and recoated and I am really happy with how it has come up and over the expense of £300+ on a new one.
Mine was quite badly flaking, especially on the mounting brackets that fit to the body work so you can see they are pitted through the fresh coating but overall I am really glad I did it. I think it cost about £120 all in for blasting and coating. I might have a picture I can attach if needed. 1984 90 V8 puma want to be.

Hello all. New member and recently picked up a 2009 Defender 90. Well chuffed but seems every time I look at it I end up wanting to buy something else!
Anyway, I bought a Mantec spare wheel carrier last week and got round to fitting it yesterday. I inadvertently bought the older ‘original’ one that doesn’t come with nut plates for the rear so fitting was a nightmare to say the least! Have just used washers for now but think it may be sensible to try get some spreader plates made up too.
After fitting I tried to get my spare boost alloy on and there’s not enough clearance between the wall of the tyre and the carrier arm? Has anyone come across this problem before and what did you do? From a bit of research I found that defender upgrades sell Dedendee mantec spare wheel Extension studs (in photo) but these are £48 with delivery etc?! Surely a cheaper option available?

Any help much appreciated!

That issue has come up before and the only solution really is to fit stud extenders. I can't help on the price though, and whether that make is the only option. Darren

An alternative to stud extenders would be to use a wheel spacer. The only problem is finding someone who will supply a single one rather than a set of four.

I was also under the impression that you had to be able to open doors from the inside if there were seats! However the gov MOT page, (not C&U I know but still) says otherwise:

2.8 Doors
These will be inspected to check that:

the latch is secure in the closed position
the front doors open from inside and outside the vehicle
the rear doors open from outside the vehicle
hinges and catches are secure and in a good condition
