speed limit on German Autobahn
A Green and Left parties' motion to introduce a speed limit on German motorways wasn't successful today.
We can continue to drive faster than 80mph (130km/h) - yeah. Oh, wait. In a Defender? Nah.

Smile
100mph is a good travelling speed - in any other car, on well-maintained motorways, on a Sunday with no lorries, when there are no school holidays, no road works, and good weather...

googling for facts I found a 50-page survey of the Ministry for the Environment, which calculates a motorway speed limit of 120 km/h (75mph) would reduce overall traffic's NOx and CO by 2%.

They also argued, that smaller engines would be sufficient in the future - a 30% reduction in bhp would save upto 19% CO2 for example.

The effects of a 100km/h (60mph) (!) limit would have twice the effect of a 120 kph limit.
So this is the limit the paper actually recommends!

This survey was written in 1999...!

embarrassing...

And here are some up-to-date figures:

How many German car drivers actually do go beyond a Defender-reasonable-top-speed of 130 km/h even if they are driving a "normal" car and are allowed to go faster:
30%

How many are driving faster than 160 km/h (100 mph)?
8%

Exceeding 190 km/h (120 mph)?
1%

Mean speed on Autobahn sections with no limit is:
122 km/h
Probably thanks to our never-ending road works where you hardly ever see anyone actually working...

So, much ado about nothing?

Driving to München last Christmas, my defender was the fastest vehicle on the Autobahn for several hours, chugging along at 55 mph... they’d just had a huge dump of snow, in only a couple of hours.

There must have been close to 10 inches in certain areas. I’ve never seen a blizzard like it. We had to switch the heater off and use the electric heated windscreen instead, as the engine kept getting too cold!

This doesn’t do it justice, but there must have been over four inches of ice on the wing mirrors. The most amazing bit was that they had cleared all the roads by 10am the following morning!! 2011 CSW XS 90
