Hmm, interesting about those ratings. Do you have a more official source than vendor websites?

I'm not sure about the Snatch but the WMIK was definitely a 'Wolf' variant and so the standard HD wheel would have been available. Perhaps it was the width that influenced the choice of Blindo's rather than the rating? Darren

My info is from my own data files not from vendor sources. You're right about the WMIK of course, but Snatch I believe originally used the the standard early 130 rim, also used on Rapier 130 variants, which was ANR1534. There is some uncertainty about the load rating I quoted for this rim and the figure of 1372kg is from unverified sources. It is, I suppose, possible that WMIK used Blindos because they are lighter than ANR4583.

To a great extent anything above around 1500kg per wheel and the load rating becomes immaterial, since I don't think there has ever been a standard LR axle rated above 2500kg. The standard Defender steel rim (ANR4636) is rated only at 1241kg per rim, which means that any Defender with 3500kg suspension (110 or 130) could potentially be right on the limit when laden to GVW, hence the use of ANR4583 on these vehicles.

I think the whole preoccupation with wheel load ratings has only really come about as a result of the approvals process and is to an extent a bit of a nonsense. Has anyone ever heard of a traditional Landrover steel rim failing as a result of being overloaded? I certainly haven't. I don't think that there were ever load rating figures produced for the original riveted steel rims used on series vehicles, but I bet that the rating would have been less than the 1241kg figure for bog standard Defender rims and there must have been thousands of occasions when they've been massively overloaded!

I think the interest in load ratings is generally more relevant to alloy wheels, given the plethora of aftermarket types available in recent years, and concerns about invalidating insurance. Knowing what the rating of LR wheels are gives an easy guide to what might be acceptable from elsewhere. Darren

Agree, important with aftermarket alloys, especially budget wheels made of Chinesium or Indium alloys.

I have seen failed alloys, and not a few, especially in competition or max GVW situations.

WMIK used Blindo wheels because of their safer behaviour on hitting a land mine. The wheel would be destroyed but was much less likely to become a projectile which was yet another problem with the Snatch vehicles with the steel wheels. 1995 Defender 110 CSW
