Is this amount of play normal
Hi guys,
Just wanting to find out why I’ve got a pull away clonk...

Is this amount of half shaft play normal? It is the same both sides. Car is a 2001 td5 with 45k on the clock. Has only been off road on my holiday this summer along gravel tracks. Nothing crazy.

Potentially yes, but you aren’t testing/showing half shaft play. I assume you have just put handbrake on. So you are showing play in, drive flange to half shaft, halfshaft to diff, ring to pinion in diff, and two lots of UJ play.

But what you’ve got there initially looks norm.

It’s a one piece shaft/flange and that movement is without the prop uj’s moving at all so I’m thinking it’s halfshaft to diff play?

I that case I would think the play to be the diff it’s self. You don’t really get much movement/wear in the half shaft to diff to be honest. You can always undo flange bolts and pull shaft out for a physical check, as any wear would be on shaft, not diff. The play in normal/standard with LR diffs.

With the wheels on the ground, and handbrake off, in neutral, how much can you turn the diff input flange.

I would say that play is pretty good for a Defender

As above, that amount is nothing. If you're getting to 1/4 of a turn then start worrying.
