Couple of things if I may - I have a clonk when taking up drive and have changed rear half shafts and the splined drive plates, they did have a little wear but really not much. However, if I turn the prop by hand with wheels on ground and handbrake off, I get about an inch of movement. If I jack it up on one side handbrake on, the wheel moves to and fro several inches before it takes up drive. Is this normal? I have taken video of it here. Looks like excessive movement to me but may be normal?

Also, I've looked at a frame joint and can't get movement with bar, but the rubber boot is torn so need to do that anyway - If I change the whole joint with its holder is that a job I can do without special tools - changing just the ball joint sounds like a bit of a problem?

Hi

Have you checked the Panard rod. When mined 'clonked' it was the bush at the end attached to the axle.


Hope that helps or at least removed one more thing to check.

if you have a td5 any idea if your diff moves similar amount or is mine excessive?

Hi

I would say mine does the same.

In regards to the panard rod on my own I could not see the movement. As soon as my wife tweaked the steering left and right it was clear as day.

Thanks - Been under looking at panhards and seem fine. Need to get wifey or kids to do steering bit but they not as keen as me this time of night Laughing

If you or anyone else, gets the chance to chock your wheels, handbrake off and try the prop twist I'd appreciate the results (especially if you don't consider your truck to have a clonk)

By way of a conclusion - play does seem normal as I've seen several now and they all have a lot of play. My problem was indeed the A Frame ball joint - wouldn't budge when trying to look for movement but when it came off it had loads of play. New one fitted and all good
