Advised against aftermarket catch can fitment
I was considering fitting a catch can into the 2.4 Puma. I was reading up on posts here and elsewhere. I e-mailed Mann-Hummel who make the Provent2 unit. They advised me AGAINST installing it as an aftermarket installation. Here is the reply from them.

Thank you very much for your interest in our products.

ProVent² is basically feasible for Diesel engines but it needs to be adjusted to the specific requirements of each engine type. Different parameters influence the performance and could, if applied wrong and not validated correctly, severe damage to your engine. Therefore we only supply this filter type directly to OEM´s and go through several development loops together with them. I am sorry to give you this negative feedback but in your case we are not able to support your inquiry.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen
Best regards

That's very odd, considering they openly promote their use on 4x4 in Australia. Maybe you could go back and point that out.

I guess this is just a backside covering exercise as they don't have the same 4x4 aftermarket in Europe and maybe haven't had an enquiry like this before, or don't know what the implications are for emissions tampering etc. As far as I can see, the Provent is sold only as an aftermarket item for industrial diesel engines in Europe, but is the very same item soild for 4x4 in the Australian market. I don't believe there is any scope to calibrate the device other than to choose the correct size for the engine power output or maybe they are referring to the pipe runs to and from.

It's possible Mann Australia are not same company as the manufacturer, but just the importer of Mann products, and have gone into this market without involvement of the manufacturer. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I don't think they imply that the Provent2 needs calibrating but the diesel engine management system must be adjusted to include the Provent2. The implication being that your engine management system would need to have instructions for this unit or any similar device fitted for it (the engine) to function properly. Maybe simpler engines like the tdi without ECU management systems would be more straight forward to deal with.
I suppose with emissions regulations and fuel management etc fitting something to the system after you have bought it might interfere with these. Still I thought it was interesting that a company would tell me NOT to use their product! I must admire their honesty. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Very odd, and some of that doesn't really seem to make sense at all:

There is nothing to adjust, so how can it be adjusted?

Er, they supply the Provent 200 very widely on the aftermarket, and indeed various of their marketing blurb makes it clear that it is designed to be suitable for aftermarket applications!

I am sure that it is better done by the manufacturer, but I don't see how you could integrate it into the EMS since it is an entirely passive component. It doesn't affect EGR performance and doesn't affect gas flows.

How can preventing your induction system from filling with oily sooty gunge harm your engine? Strange.

Also curious that the Mann+Hummel boffin in the video I posted in my recent thread on the subject (link below), whilst advocating the retention of the EGR, did not at any time say "don't fit a Provent"!

I think you are being charitable, I would say that is a fob off because they can’t be bothered or don’t value your custom. In that response they say they only supply the Provent directly to OEMs which just not true. It is sold widely all over the place for anyone to buy. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Just because something is for sale doesn’t mean you should be buying it.

Funnily enough the Land Rover Series 111 Repair and operation manual tells you how to remove and overhaul the EGR valve on series 111's made for the Australian market. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
