Difficult to fill tank
I had the breather/vent hose replaced on my Td5 90 on Friday. When filling up, the pump at the station keeps clicking off. So trying to fill up with diesel takes an age. I’m guessing that this is happening because air isn’t going up the breather/vent hose? I’ve used 3/4” - 19mm marine fuel line. Any ideas as to why this is happening with the new hose? My thinking is to buy an extra piece of marine line to extend the hose and put a bit of a bend in it to relieve any choke/tight points in the hose. Any ideas and advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Charlie

Tried a different pump/station? I find some pumps are really twitchy and click off when filling the Defender. Different angle usually does it, or pulling out slightly.

(Stop sniggering you lot)

Between the sniggering, I would try a different filling station if possible. I find the Defender fills better if I just pull the nozzle out a little. Saying all that, I have to listen for the tank to fill. It changes tone as it gets full and if I forget it usually spits diesel all over the forecourt and me if I am unlucky.

I’m glad I’m not the only one then! I’ve had it before and pulling out slightly or changing angle helped. Now I have to pull out and slow down the flow rate Laughing I’ve only been using supermarket filling stations since the vent hose replacement so I’ll try somewhere like a BP next time! Charlie

The trigger on the end of the pump start to wear and cannot hold the spring mech back so they click off for this reason.
It happens with my local garage, just try another pump next time. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

Not with the Defender, but my last Ford Focus company car (62 Plate) was an absolute nightmare when our local Sainsbury's installed new pumps. It was so bad, I tried to fill up at another Sainsbury's (I was, at the time collecting Nectar points).

There is obviously something they can do to remedy this problem as others were moaning and after about six weeks, the pumps were fine.

OK seems like it’s down to dodgy pumps then! Thanks for the assistance chaps! I’ll try a non-supermarket station tomorrow and report back! Charlie

Solved the problem the other day! Turned out that the new vent hose had rather a significant kink in it. Just pulled it straight and all is fine now! Charlie
