God, I hate rats my solution is to borrow a Jack Russell Terrier or a cat and leave it in the defender overnight. I must say since we adopted two cats both the mice and rats at the cottage have disappeared, I have also noticed that the dogs do not sniff and scratch at holes in the outbuildings anymore. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Me too, gilarion. Brought up on a rat infested farm. Never got used to the things or the rancid smell. Managed to survive childhood without picking up anything nasty. In a later life ended up working in the waste water industry for ten years. The company I was sub-contracted to work for scared the hell out of us with warnings of Leptospirosis (Weil's disease) which is spread by rats - as they should have done as it's a deadly disease. Worth remembering if any of you like fishing or mess around rivers (or any other areas frequented by rats), and get flu like symptoms shortly afterwards, get to the Doctors or A&E after asap and tell them where you have been. It's fairly uncommon, but not a disease you need to fool with. Knew a canoeist who caught it once, and survived. It's really not nice. He was very lucky. Very interesting, Sulisuli. Never knew that, but everyday is a school day |

Think you may have answered your own question with regards to if rats are present. If no rats are present then you get mice.
