Wales 2011 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Indus Silver
Slow Fuel Guage
Hello folks

Hoping someone can help me. Tried a search with no luck.

2011 Puma 2.4

Topped up my tank from 3/4 full. When I turned on the ignition, the guage was still at 3/4 full.

Drove for 1/2 an hour, and it very slowly moved to full. Then stuck at full for ages, and very slowly moved down as I was driving ( probably took an hour)

Best way to describe it is it looks like its working, but in very slow motion

Any ideas what’s wrong please?

Thanks for the responses

I’ve owned the vehicle for over 7 years, and its been working perfectly!

Think of all the time wasted when I could have had this feature all that time

On a aserious note - does the fuel guage read accurately like this?... I have a feeling it’s reading too high compared to how it used to

Is there a fix?

Dgardel - I wonder if my misses was refilling it through the back window as we were driving along Wink

The fuel gauge is progressive. Mine shows full for the first 150 km and went down faster and faster, The last quarter is then only for a little bit more than 100 km, whereas the other ones are for 150+ km.

And yes, I have to drive some minutes before the gauge went to full after the filling is finished.

When I first bought my Puma if I filled the tank I could drive for approx 100 miles before the gauge moved at all, then it would drop increasing quickly over the remaining 300 miles or so from that tankful. It was very logarithmic in its behaviour.

Interestingly after I fitted a new sender unit last year (the old one split and leaked) the gauge is now perfectly linear and drops at a constant rate proportional to the fuel used, roughly 1/4 tank every 100 miles, which is about right.

Blackwolf - I was wondering if it could be a sender issue, seeing as it had been working perfectly normally all this time, and then starts doing this

I will run it for a few miles and see how it behaves and then take a decision

Sound like I need a new sender myself then. It was working linear before it drowned now it is not.

Don't change your sender. May be same problem after changing.

It ended up only happening once.

When I refilled the tank again all went back to normal
