Aircon retrofit with a difference
Hello all,

I've got a bit of a plan for the 90. I fancy A/C but not the clunky bolt on under dash job a la factory.

I currently have a D2 setup in the workshop minus evaporator.

I plan to fit a modified heater box with evap and ducting to allow recirc.

My question is, has anyone fiddled with aircon bits to make a working system out of bits and pieces?

The wiring and switching side doesn't concern me. It more pipes and rads that might be more complicated to get right.

So any experience shared would be great Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I have used a retrofitsystem, i have a 2001 td5.
The condenser is in the normal position on the front, no fan, the front end is standard.
The compressor is a little bigger so I have to un bolt it to change the centrifugal filter.
The evaporator is in the rear on top of the back door.

The air comes front the back and cools everything like an AC of a room no small vents heating your face, BUT it could freeze the ideas of the people on the back seat Augusto

Grafty, I am thinking along the same lines.
I have a D2 HVAC unit and blower together with the control unit and wiring loom.
I am planning to use the defender condenser and compressor and get the defender air con pipes altered to fit. The low pressure side should be relatively easy, I am not sure about the high pressure side.

What I haven't worked out yet is how to use the HVAC unit. One option is to use the whole unit as it is and mount it where the air filter box is. That would mean relocating the intake pipes and air filter. It would also mean cutting into the bulkhead for the vent holes.
The other option is to re-engineer the HVAC unit to fit where the current heater fits but that could end up being a lot of complex work if I try to keep all of the electronic controls for the flaps etc.
How are you planning to modify the heater box and evaporator?

I plan on extending the standard heater box with an evaporator on the cold side. Also a duct from the rear with a selectable flap for recirc or outside air Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon
