The thought crossed my mine but I figured the Gwynn probably knew how to set up a prop ! They’d be no need to mark it as there are already arrows lined up either side , all handmade and individually balanced .

May as well give at a go though ! https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

^^^^ I came across this with mine, whilst it wasn't the actual problem I had at the time I can say that it did tighten everything up once replaced.
It could be exaggerated by the larger weight of a new prop.

Any possibility at all you could get any form of camera under there like a go pro? Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Ok so I put all four corners on axle stands and popped it into gear , the vibrations weren’t immediately obvious but with my hand on the rear diff you could definitely feel more vibration than with the front diff which had none.
The transmission was shaking on its drivers side mount a bit but not by much .

I went up to 3rd gear , Interestingly whatever gear I had it in including with the diff locked , the passenger side front wheel never turned except when accelerating or with assistance . I’m not suggesting there was any resistance but probably worth a mention . It’s the longer of the half shafts so I suppose the diff would be bias to the front right but the rear wheels both turned unless I applied a hand to one wheel to slow it, which one would expect.

I suppose my next port of call is rear diff out to inspect and transmission rubbers replaced unless anyone has a suggestion ?!

Almost gassed myself out so had to stop !! https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

I am running out of suggestions but somehow symptoms may be pointing to the transfer case. I hope somebody comes up with a better idea. Puma 110" SW

I had this exact same problem when I put my gywn Lewis rear prop on, although I only got vibration at 35+mph.

I was at a bit of a loss as to what to do, so all I did was take the prop off and spent 10-15mins making sure that the mating surfaces were completely free from any rust , dirt and grease. Especially as the shape of the prop flange is slightly different to the standard one.

When I put it back on I rotated the whole prop 180 degrees (clutching at straws!).

It’s was fine after that, so i assumed that is was just poor work by me. 🤔 2002 td5 90 county hardtop

Thanks Jay , I thought the same but alas it didn’t sort the problem . I’ve put the original back on and it’s back to normal but I can still feel a light vibration , I hadn’t noticed before https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

Well unsurprisingly it’s all got worse and hasn't fixed itself Shocked

Had a bit more time today to spend under the defender. I was getting some strong vibrations yesterday that made the truck feel a bit unpredictable !

I’ve had all four wheels up again on axle stands , popped it into 3rd and 4th and sure enough the whole vehicle shakes. Dropped the front propshaft off as visually it appeared to be unbalanced . No difference , still vibrated but not quite as much. Dropped the back propshaft off as well and the vibrations are still there ! So i’m assuming its the transfer box but before i spend £700 on one is there anything else ?

Ive changed all of the engine and transfer box mounts for good measure but no difference.

I should add that there’s significant backlash on pick up and take off with an audible clank / clunk , when the front prop is removed and diff lock engaged. Also the rear flange has an audible metallic click when turned manually, is this normal ? Its not as evident when the front prop is back on.

If I replace the transfer box should I go standard or tick any of the mod boxes , the current box has £135k on it so hasn't done to badly ?!

I’m heading towards an entirely new drive train at this rate . Thank you https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

The slack on the front flange of the TBox is normal.

Can you borrow/get a std rear propshaft? Puma 110" SW

I’ve tried a standard rear prop and that doesn’t make any difference although it’s slightly less dramatic no doubt due to the weight .

So you think the clunking and backlash is normal when coming out of drive with the diff engaged ( when on stands) ? https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

Yes. The backlash is normal due to the design of the front dog clutch. I can think the idea is to facilitate the difflock engagement.

At the moment I can not think whats the source of the vibration. Are both rear diff flange and rear T box flange inline (vertical cross section)? Puma 110" SW

Does it vibrate with both propshafts removed? Both propshafts and handbrake drum removed?

Does it vibrate with propshafts on and wheels removed?

Thanks MK , I’m turning the hay this afternoon but I’ll have a look to see if the box flanges are in line later , it’s not been out before to my knowledge.

Yes Blackwolf, it vibrates with both shafts removed , without the drum less so but then the drum isn’t held tight and square with prop removed so I’d expect it to improve with it drum removed. Interestingly though I can har the handbrake scuffing ever so slightly every 90 degrees or so . Another reason that I thought it may be the box.

I haven’t tried with all the wheels removed and props back on but that surely won’t make a difference if the transfer box is vibrating without props ? https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/
