Air Conditioning Problem
Hi,

I'm new here and I'm hoping someone can help me.

The factory fitted air con on my 2007 Defender 90 TDCi has not worked since I bought it last year.

I had the system recharged but that didn't fix the problem and I basically forgot about it until I became motivated by the recent spell of warm weather.

I undertook some basic diagnostics at the weekend with the following results:

1. When I switch the A/C on the button lights up and the fan switches on.
2. The fuse under the dashboard is fine.
3. There is no power getting to the compressor.
4. If I apply power directly to the compressor the clutch seems to engage but there is no cold air.

Based on the above, can anyone suggest what I try next? I was wondering about a possible relay failure but I am unable to identify which of the many relays (under dash and under seat) may relate to the A/C.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Thanks, that's a great start and this evening's work taken care of.

I'll post an update when I've checked them out.

when they filled it did they pressure test it? i would suggest its leaked out and the compressor doesnt run due to this, ie to stop it overheating with no refrigerant in it. Cheers

The garage didn't actually do anything. They told me the refrigerant was fine but I don't know if they tested the level, pressure or both.

i would get the system pressure tested first before you run up the compressor and potentially kill it in the process. Cheers

They will have just checked the pressure, the only way to check the level is to vacuum it all out then refill it with the set amount of refrigerant and oil. Take it to Kwikfit and get them to recharge it, if it doesn't work they refund your money. Before they charge it they'll vacuum test it which checks for any leaks, the machine is automatic, if it detects a leak it won't refill it.

From the Kwikfit site;
Quote:
Air-Con
We offer a ‘Recharge or No Charge’ Air-Conditioning Service

You only pay if the coolest vent temperature from your car has improved by more than 10% when measured in degrees Celsius. Please note that if the ambient temperature around the car is less than 9°C it may affect the results of the Air-Con recharge test results. In these circumstances it is at the Manager’s discretion whether to offer a refund. Air-Con repairs are guaranteed for 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first.

If it doesn't work after it's been refilled, then it could be the pressure switch is faulty. The compressor clutch won't engage if the pressure switch isn't activating it. AC systems are actually pretty basic.

If you've checked the relays for the system and it still won't work, check the magnetic coil on the compressor. Sometimes these die and you won't get cold air.

There are 2 fuses for the air con in the main fuse panel. I had the same problem and it was F42 that had blown. It now keeps blowing Sad 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X

Fixed it .. the wiring loom that comes from the bulkhead along the o/s front wing and to the fan had rubbed through the insulation and was shorting out on the sharp edge of the wing. Fixed the wiring and all fine now for the summer Very Happy 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X
