I grew up around Polzeath - might head there this weekend. Don't worry about the loony Landy detals/location but I'll keep my eyes peeled! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |

Ive had both and let me give my 10 cents worth....Mike your point re ground clearance is incorrect the Defender is much worse on ground clearance when the D3 is in off road height, this is due to the diff arrangement on the Defenders being of the old design, hence the need for diff guards etc. I took my lifted Puma around hogmoor arena off road site and was constantly bottoming out and getting grounded in tank ruts, the D3s never had an issue. Early ones were prone to a few electrical gremilins but my 05 model was very good and i never had any issues and im currently prepping up a 57 plate to compliment my D4 tarmac warrior. Re reliability and the Defenders....my TD5 was fantastic, minimal drive train slop, bomb proof diffs, ok noisy compared to the Puma, but if you are REALLY using it properly, rather than road driving...i dont think they are as reliable plus the components have been de engineered in recent years using sub standard materials. Dont get me wrong, i love Defenders, but as an everyday vehicle, offroader, van, luxury express..i recon the D3/D4/Landcrusier/FJ Cruiser/ and New jeeps are making the Defender show its age and are superior. However if i had to chose just 1 and i was going to use it as a true multi function vehicle it would be a new V8 TD 76 series Lancruiser....Just wish we had them over here ![]() ![]() |

Zag in OZ and South Africa you can still buy the 70 series (76 is my fave)..Cult following of the Defender with more space for the driver and just as many goodies
![]() In standard form they look a bit toot but with a few tastefull mods they look awesome...best of all you can get a bomb proof diesel engine (straight 6 4.2 liter in Sa and a V8 TD 4.5 in Aus) The wife is from SA and i must admit i went out in one as a mutual friend of ours is a sales guy for Toyota and took us off roading in a 76...i didnt want to give the keys back ![]() ![]() One day i will have one and drive it home from SA hopefully. &feature=related You cannot teach stupid people to do clever things |

The earlier LCs and Patrols are great vehicles - I've always liked them along with the more basic versions of the G Wagen.
For me, part of the Defender's appeal is that they are the only 4x4 that seems to still have the same rugged design and charm. John http://www.hampshire4x4response.co.uk 2011 Tdci 110 CSW XS |

The 70 LC is definitely pretty cool.
A guy who owns a campsite nr Kaikoura in South NZ took us up his mountain (yep - he owns a mountain) in his after we became good friends. I will never forget it! It looked a lot like this: ![]() Click image to enlarge Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |
