I would do is security for a start before you even go anywhere near it, get one of those optimill removable bosses, One thing I should have bought for mine, but it got stolen and destroyed before I even got the chance to order it off this year. Everything really went wrong at the wrong time sadly. Big MOT bill which killed my savings for security sadly, then xmas fell, and then I was hit, with the stolen car card.
I have just got back into a TD5, and this time I made the point of ordering the boss before I bought a TD5 so it was ready to plug and play.

After security I would do the timing belt and tappets just to make sure that those are spot on.
Then go from there Thumbs Up Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

How do I work out what spline boss I have?

I would like to keep the wheel stock, is that possible with a removable boss?

sadly not mate, one of those things I had to give up over security sadly. This will have a 48 spline, the TD5 is a 36 spline. Not sure why they reverted back to the 36 on the TD5.
You can pick a wheel that doesn't look so out of place, Mine is smaller than the defenders wheel but it was cheap and it looks sort in keeping with the spec. its smaller than the original wheel but I am not fussed. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Ah that’s a pain.

Am I right in thinking a 1995 300Tdi defender should be fitted with callipers capable of accepting vented break disks?

There are currently solid disks fitted, but need changed.

these are solids all round, you can bolt on TD5 stuff at the front which gives you the vented setup. ( you can pick up the full works for 150 on ebay Thumbs Up rears I would just give them a service, but you can upgrade those too if you wanted with 110 stuff, but that's a bit of a grey area that one. Some say it might be over kill others say its spot on. Just replaced the full works on mine, TD5 break setup at the front and replaced the standard rear stuff with replacement parts. But my brakes had really seen better days! Just have to look at proctas 300 TDI thread. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

For what it's worth if servicing it yourself then you can save a fortune and it's not that difficult. I've done it for the last 7 years in front of my house.

They're not difficult to work on, and I should know having snapped two cranks and done two engine swaps and rebuilds this year already Rolling Eyes Ed

Only 110s and 130s had vented fronts as standard. On 90s it was an optional extra, and most don’t have them.

In order to upgrade you’ll need new calipers. Or a spacer kit, if they still exist.

Is there a way to tell from the VIN or calliper?

It’s listed as a 90 County and entering the VIN on various motor factors brings up both solid and vented disks, so I’m non the wiser.

Well, you could look underneath and if there is a vented disc sitting in the caliper then it’s probably a fair assumption that the vehicle has vented discs fitted!

Laughing way ahead of you, there is a solid disk, but that doesn’t mean that the callipers won’t accept vented disks.....

Solids could have been fitted to reduce cost of for the off-road “benefits” of supposedly not collecting mud.

Yes it does. Vented disks are thicker and the callipers are fitted with spacers to accommodate this. Vented and non-vented disks are not directly interchangeable. Darren

Surely you can fit solid disks to vented callipers but not vice-versa, and from reading around this forum and other forums, people do, either for cost or off road “benefits”.

I am not suggesting you can fit vented disks to callipers designed for solid disks, because they simply wouldn’t fit.

I guess it may be possible with aftermarket parts but LR vented and non-vented disks cannot just be swapped without either adding or removing the spacer between the two halfs of each calliper. If you fitted solid disks to a calliper designed to accommodate vented ones, the pistons would be pushed too far out. Darren

I would just fit the full works, less messing about the better, you can pick up a front kit for Less than £200, that's with discs and pads etc. Great upgrade for any Defender Thumbs Up Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
