Hi Quinton

Just reading this post now, but I can confirm that 18p engine has no EGR as I have a 2002 model and have owned it since it was 6 months old, so no mods have been made to my engine.

The TD5 engines were never produced in South Africa.
vehicles arrived asSKD and were assembled here until the plant was closed down.
After that defender were imported complete as thr rest of the land rover line of vehicles.
I can supply dates if necessary

i have a 2002 18P, and it definitely doesn't have steel head dowels, I replaced the head gasket as it blew because of the plastic ones.
